Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not support the weight of the vehicle on the suspension arm; the arm will deform under its weight.



    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     



    Wheel
     
    Bolt, and disconnect the brake hose from the strut
     
    With ABS brakes, wiring harness from the strut
     
    Bolts and strut from the steering knuckle

  4.  
  5. To disassemble the strut:

    Install a bolt and 2 nuts to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut shell and secure it in a vise
     
    Compress the coil spring
     
    Remove the dust cover and hold the spring seat so that it will not turn. Remove the nut on the top of the strut
     
    Remove the suspension support, bearing, dust seal, spring seat, spring, insulators and bumper
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. To assemble the strut:
    NOTE
    Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the nut. Also, check that the bearing fits into the recess in the suspension support.



    Install the spring bumper to piston
     
    Using a spring compressor, compress the spring
     
    Install the coil spring to the strut. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the lower seat
     
    Install the spring seat with the insulator
     
    Install the dust seal on the spring seat
     
    Install the suspension support and tighten 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). After the nut has been tighten, release the compressor tool tension
     
    Pack multipurpose grease into the suspension support. Install the dust cover
     

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Nuts holding the strut to the strut tower. Nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Steering knuckle to the strut lower bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Insert the 2 bolts from the rear side and tighten the strut-to-steering knuckle arm bolts. Tighten as follows:

    Echo: 97 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
     
    Corolla and Celica: 113 ft. lbs. (153 Nm).
     

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Brake line to the steering knuckle
     
    If equipped with ABS, secure the wiring harness
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the alignment, if needed.
  10.

  4.  
  5. To disassemble the strut:

    Install a bolt and 2 nuts to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut shell and secure it in a vise
     
    Compress the coil spring
     
    Remove the dust cover and hold the spring seat so that it will not turn. Remove the nut on the top of the strut
     
    Remove the suspension support, bearing, dust seal, spring seat, spring, insulators and bumper

To install:

  1. To assemble the strut:
    NOTE
    Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the nut. Also, check that the bearing fits into the recess in the suspension support.



    Install the spring bumper to piston

    Install the coil spring to the strut. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the lower seat
     
    Install the spring seat with the insulator
     
    Install the dust seal on the spring seat
     
    Install the suspension support and tighten 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). After the nut has been tighten, release the compressor tool tension

  3. Install or connect the following:

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Brake line to the steering knuckle
     
    If equipped with ABS, secure the wiring harness
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the alignment, if needed.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut and disconnect the front stabilizer link assembly from the shock absorber assembly. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon (6 mm) wrench to hold the stud.
  4.  
  5. With ABS: Remove the bolt, disconnect the front flexible hose No. 1 and speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Without ABS: Remove the bolt, disconnect the front flexible hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts on the lower side of the shock absorber assembly
    NOTE
    When removing the bolt, stop the bolt from rotating and loosen the nut.

  10.  
  11. Remove the 3 nuts on the upper side of the shock absorber assembly
  12.  
  13. Remove the front shock absorber with the coil
  14.  
  15. Install 2 nuts and a bolt to the bracket at the lower side of the shock absorber assembly and secure it in a vise.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front suspension support dust cover from the front suspension support sub-assembly.
  18.  
  19. Using SST, compress the front coil spring.
  20.  
  21. Using SST to hold the front coil spring seat upper remove the nut.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front suspension support sub-assembly, front suspension support dust seal, front coil spring seat upper, front coil spring insulator upper, front coil spring, front spring bumper and front coil spring insulator lower.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the front coil spring insulator onto the shock absorber assembly front.
  2.  
  3. Install the front spring bumper to the shock absorber piston rod.
  4.  
  5. Using SST, compress the front coil spring.
    NOTE
    Do not use an impact wrench.

  6.  
  7. Install the front coil spring LH to the shock absorber assembly. Fit the lower end of the front coil spring into the gap of the spring lower seat.
  8.  
  9. Install the front coil spring insulator upper.
  10.  
  11. Install the front coil spring seat upper to the shock absorber assembly with the mark facing the outside of the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the front suspension support dust seal and front suspension support sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Hold the front coil spring seat, install a new nut. Torque it to 35 ft.-lbs (47 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the front suspension support dust cover.
  18.  
  19. Apply MP grease No. 2 into the suspension support sub- assembly.
    CAUTION
    Do not touch grease on rubber surface of upper support.

  20.  
  21. Install the shock absorber with the 2 bolts.
  22.  
  23. Install the 3 nuts to the upper side of front shock absorber with coil spring. Torque it to 29 ft.-lbs (39 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the 2 bolts and nuts to the lower side of front shock absorber with coil spring. Torque it to 113 ft.-lbs (153 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing bolt, stop the bolt from rotating and torque the nut.

  26.  
  27. With ABS: Install the front flexible hose and speed sensor with the bolt. Torque it to 21 ft.-lbs (29 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Without ABS: Install the front flexible hose with the bolt. Torque it to 21 ft.-lbs (29 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the front stabilizer link assembly with the nut. Torque it to 55 ft.-lbs (74 Nm). If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold the stud.
  32.  
  33. Inspect and adjust the wheel alignment.
