Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  


CAUTION
All models covered herein are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

  1. Remove the battery and air cleaner assembly with hose.
  2.

  1. On models with cruise control, unbolt and remove the cruise control actuator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the starter.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt and unclamp the clutch slave cylinder release cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ground cable.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the back-up light switch wiring.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the transaxle control cables from the linkage.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three bolts on the upper side of the transaxle case.

  1. Unbolt and remove the nuts on the left engine mounting for the upper side.
  2.  
  3. Attach an engine support fixture.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine under covers.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left and right driveshafts.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt and pull down the front exhaust pipe and support bracket. on some models the O 2 sensor will need to be removed.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt and remove the starter.
  14.  
  15. On the C52 transaxle, unbolt and remove the engine center crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove the engine front mounting as follows:
  18.  
  19. Remove the hole plug.
    1. Extract the nut and bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the four bolts and lower the mount.

  21. Remove the engine rear engine mounting as follows:
    1. Remove the two hole plugs.
    2.  
    3. Remove the through bolt.
    4.  
    5. Remove the four bolts, two nuts and the engine rear mount.
    6.

  23. Remove the engine left mount bolt from the lower side.
  24.  
  25. On the S54 transaxles, unbolt the engine center crossmember.
  26.  
  27. Remove the stiffener plate held in by six bolts and a nut.
  28.  
  29. Jack up the transaxle slightly and support it.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts and lower the engine on the left side and pull the transaxle from the engine.
  32.  
  33. To install, align the input shaft spline with the clutch disc and install the transaxle to the engine. Tighten the mounting bolts on the manual transaxle to:

    S54- A 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    S54- B bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm)
     
    C52-47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)

  1. Install all the remaining components in the reverse order of removal and tighten to specifications in the end of this section.
  2.  
  3. Install the air cleaner assembly with hose.
  4.  
  5. Fill the transaxle to specifications. Refer to the chart in Section 1.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the front end alignment.
  10.  
  11. Perform a road test. check for abnormal noises and smooth shifting.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hood
     
    Wiper arms
     
    Right and left cowl top ventilator covers
     
    No. 2 cylinder head cover
     
    Battery
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Wiring harness from the transaxle
     
    Transaxle control cable
     
    Clutch release cylinder
     
    Ground cable from the left engine mount
     
    Back-up light switch wires
     
    Vehicle speed sensor wiring
     
    2 transaxle upper side mounting bolts
     
    Starter

  7. At this point, attach an engine crane to support the engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left side engine under cover
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    2 bolts and 1 nut securing the engine rear mount to the crossmember
     
    Sliding yoke
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Support the transaxle
     
    Engine left mounting bracket
     
    Engine rear mount and bracket
     
    5 transaxle lower side mount bolts
     
    Transaxle

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Torque the 5 lower bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount and bracket. Torque the mount bolt and nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm); the bracket bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Engine left mounting bracket. Torque the bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Sliding yoke
     
    2 bolts and 1 nut securing the engine rear mount to the crossmember. Torque the bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    Left side engine under cover
     
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    2 transaxle upper side mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Vehicle speed sensor wiring
     
    Back-up light switch wires
     
    Ground cable from the left engine mount
     
    Clutch release cylinder
     
    Transaxle control cable
     
    Wiring harness from the transaxle

  3. Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     
    Air cleaner case assembly with hose
     
    Release cylinder tube bracket
     
    Clutch release cylinder
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Ground cable on the transaxle
     
    Shift cables from the transaxle
     
    Vehicle speed sensor connector or the speedometer cable

  1. Position the transaxle to the engine and raise the engine right side. Align the input shaft with the clutch disc
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle to the engine. 3 upper transaxle bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Transaxle case protector. Bolts: 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    4 transaxle lower bolts. Bolt A: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm); Bolt B: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
     
    Left engine mounting bracket to the engine left mounting insulator. Bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Engine front mounting bracket and insulator. 2 bracket bolts: 57 ft. lbs. (77 Nm). Through-bolt: 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mounting bracket and insulator. Bracket bolts: 57 ft. lbs. (77 Nm). Through-bolt: 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).

  1. Align the input shaft with the clutch disc and install the transaxle to the engine. 12mm bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). 10mm bolts: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Left engine mount. Bolts: 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts to the engine rear end plate side. Bolts: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Starter, lower bolt and electrical connector to the starter. Bolt: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Engine center support member. Radiator support bolts: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm). Frame bolts: 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mounting. Bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Engine front mounting. Bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Hole covers
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Lower ball joint to lower arm. Bolt and nuts: 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Torque the 5 lower bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount and bracket. Torque the mount bolt and nut to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm); the bracket bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Engine left mounting bracket. Torque the bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
