Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering wheel
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    No. 2 column hole cover
     
    Sliding yoke
     
    Pressure and return lines
     
    Hood
     

  6.  
  7. Attach and engine crane to the engine for support.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut with the bolt tight.



    Lower arms from the knuckles
     
    Rear engine mount insulator
     
    Front cross member with the steering rack
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Heat insulator
     
    Damper
     
    4 bolts and nuts attaching the gear to the cross member
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering rack to cross member. Torque the nuts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Damper. Bolts: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Heat insulator. Bolt: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Front suspension assembly. Front bolts: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm); rear bolts: 86 ft. lbs. (116 Nm).
     
    Rear mount insulator. Torque the bolt and 2 nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Lower arm to knuckle. Horizontal bolt: 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm); vertical bolt: 97 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
     
    Hood
     
    Sliding yoke
     
    No. 2 column hole cover
     
    Tie rods
     
    Pressure and return lines
     
    Under covers
     
    Steering wheel. Nut: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Place matchmarks on the steering column intermediate shaft and the steering gear control valve shaft.



    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Right and left-hand engine undercovers.
     
    Left and right-hand tie rod ends. Separate the tie rod using a puller.
     
    Oxygen sensor
     
    Front exhaust pipe and brackets.
     



    Lower bolt to the intermediate shaft
     
    Intermediate shaft from the control valve shaft.
     
    Pressure feed and return tubes from the steering rack.
     
    Tube clamp bracket
     

  4.  
  5. Support the engine and transaxle with a support fixture.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arms from the lower ball joints.
     
    Through-bolts to the front and rear mounting insulators.
     
    Bolts holding the rear of the lower control arm to the sub-frame and body. Remove the bolts on both sides of the sub-frame.
     

  8.  
  9. Support the front sub-frame with a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolts holding the sub-frame to the body. Lower the front sub-frame with the lower suspension arms and steering gear.
     
    Power steering gear assembly by removing the set bolts and nuts from the sub-frame.
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear assembly to the sub-frame. Bolts and nuts: 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Sub-frame to the body. Bolts: 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Bolts to hold the rear of the lower control arms to the sub-frame and body. Bolt that goes through the lower control arm to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm) and the other 2 bolts to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm). Install the bolts to both sides
     
    Through-bolts to the front and rear mounting insulators. Bolts: 64 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
     
    Lower control arms to the lower ball joints. Nuts and bolts: 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
     
    Pressure feed and return tubes to the steering rack. Tubes: 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Tube clamp bracket. Bolts: 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Lower bolt. Upper and lower bolts: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Oxygen sensor
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckles
     
    Right and left-hand engine undercovers
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Power steering fluid
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Position the front wheels straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If equipped with an air bag, disable the system and secure the steering wheel.



    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     



    Steering column hole cover and loosen the upper pinch bolt on the sliding yoke
     
    Lower pinch bolt at the pinion shaft
     
    Front wheels
     
    Left and right engine undercovers.
     
    Left and right tie rod ends.
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support and tension it to support the engine without raising it.
    CAUTION
    The engine hoist is now in place and under tension. Use care when repositioning the vehicle and make necessary adjustments to the engine support.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arms from the ball joints
     
    If equipped with a stabilizer bar, stabilizer bar links from both lower control arms
     
    Right rear control arm bushing retaining bracket. Do this for both lower control arms
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Grommet in the crossmember
     
    Bolt and nuts holding in the middle of the crossmember and support the crossmember with a jack
     
    Bolts from the outer side of the suspension crossmember
     
    Suspension crossmember with the lower suspension arms
     
    Exhaust front pipe support
     
    Engine rear mount insulator
     
    Engine rear mount bracket
     
    Pressure feed and return tubes
     
    Brackets and grommets to the power steering rack
     

  10.  
  11. Slide the power steering gear assembly to the right side of the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering assembly
     
    Grommets and brackets. Nuts and bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Pressure feed and return tubes. Nuts: 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount bracket. Bolts: 57 ft. lbs. (77 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount insulator. Bolt: 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipe support. Bolts: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Outer 6 bolts to hold the crossmember to the vehicle. Bolts: 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
     
    Center crossmember-to-radiator support bolts: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Lower A frame-to-center bolts: 161 ft. lbs. (218 Nm).
     
    Lower A frame-to-outer bolts: 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Front, center and rear mount bolts: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Grommet to the crossmember
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Lower control arm bushing retaining bracket. Do not tighten the bolts or nut at this time
     
    Lower control arm to the lower ball joint. Bolt and nuts: 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm). Connect both lower control arms to the ball joints
     
    Stabilizer bar links to the lower control arms. Nuts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Sliding yoke to the pinion shaft. Lower bolt: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten upper bolt: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Steering column hole cover. Bolts: 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
     
    Left and right-hand tie rod ends. Nuts: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     
    Control arm bracket bolts: 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar bracket bolt: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Bracket nut: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and top off the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the alignment, if needed.
  6.

NOTE
Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate when disconnected from the steering gear. Damage to the air bag spiral cable may result.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Place the wheels pointing straight ahead and lock the steering wheel in place.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Luggage compartment trim box cover
     
    Tool box
     
    Power steering pressure and return lines from the power steering vane pump
     
    Front luggage undercover
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Steering intermediate shaft
     
    Power steering gear mounting bolts
     
    Power steering gear
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Power steering gear mounting bolts: 42 ft. .lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    Steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Outer tie rod ends: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  4.
