Neutral Safety Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness or harnesses leading to the switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts retaining the switch to the transmission. Remove the switch.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Place the switch into position on the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Attach the harness the switch.
  6.  
  7. Make adjustments as necessary.
  8.  

ADJUSTMENT

If the engine will start with the gear selector in any range other than N or P , the neutral safety switch requires adjustment.

  1. Locate the neutral safety switch on the right side of the transmission and loosen the switch bolt.
  2.  
  3. Move the gear selector to the N position.
  4.  
  5. Align the groove on the safety switch shaft with the basic line which is scribed on the housing.
  6.  
  7. With the groove and the line aligned, tighten the switch bolt.
  8.  
  9. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the switch terminals as shown in the illustration. If a problem is found, replace the switch.

  1. Locate the neutral safety switch on the right side of the transmission and loosen the switch bolt.
  2.  
  3. Move the gear selector to the N position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the neutral safety switch connector and connect an ohmmeter between the terminals.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the switch to the point where there is continuity between terminals W and B .
  8.  
  9. Connect the connector and tighten the switch bolt to 48 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
  10.
