  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly, complete with hoses, from the carburetor.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the EGR valve and carburetor. Mark them first to aid in the installation.
  8.
  9. Remove the fuel lines, electrical leads, accelerator linkage, and water hose from the carburetor.
  10.
  11. Remove the water bypass hose from the manifold.
  12.
  13. Unbolt and remove the intake manifold, complete with carburetor and EGR valve.
  14.
  15. Cover the cylinder head ports with clean shop cloths to keep anything from falling into the cylinder head or block.
  16.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace the gasket with a new one. Tighten the mounting bolts to the figure given in the Torque Specifications chart. Tighten the bolts in several stages working from the inside bolts outward. Remember to refill the cooling system.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the air intake hose from both the air cleaner assembly on one end and the air intake chamber on the other.
  6.
  7. Tag and disconnect all vacuum lines attached to the intake chamber and manifold.
  8.
  9. Tag and disconnect the wires to the cold start injector, throttle position sensor, and the water hoses from the throttle body.
  10.
  11. Remove the EGR valve from the intake chamber.
  12.
  13. Tag and disconnect the actuator cable, accelerator cable and AT throttle cable (if equipped) from the cable bracket on the intake chamber.
  14.
  15. Unbolt the air intake chamber from the intake manifold and remove the chamber with the throttle body attached.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel delivery pipe.
  18.
  19. Tag and disconnect the air valve hose from the intake manifold.
  20.
  21. Make sure all hoses, lines and wires are tagged for later installation and disconnected from the intake manifold. Unbolt the manifold from the intake manifold. Unbolt the manifold from the cylinder head, removing the delivery pipe and injection nozzle in unit with the manifold.

Removal of the intake manifolds on these engines is a complicated and tedious procedure. Make sure all wires, hoses and lines are tagged to simplify installation. It is advisable to have this work done by a professional familiar with the complex fuel injection systems of these engines.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Remove the water hose bracket from the valve cover.
  6.

Tag all hoses, lines and wires for later assembly.

  1. Unfasten the hose clamps and remove the hoses from the water pump and the water valve.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the heater temperature control cable from the water valve.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the PCV hoses from the valve cover and the intake air connector.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the intake air connector from the air intake chamber and the air flow meter and remove it.
  8.
  9. Tag and disconnect all hoses, lines and wires leading from the air intake chamber and the throttle body (it is a good idea to follow the numerical removal sequence shown in the illustration).
  10.
  11. Unscrew the seven mounting bolts and remove the air intake chamber and the throttle body as one unit.
  12.
  13. Tag and disconnect the wiring connectors at the fuel injectors.
  14.

For further illustrations, refer to Fuel System .

  1. Unscrew the four mounting bolts and remove the fuel delivery pipe with the injectors.
  2.

WARNING
When removing the injectors and the delivery pipe, be sure to have a suitable container underneath, to catch the large quantity of fuel.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following parts as shown in the illustration.
  2.
  3. Unscrew the eight mounting bolts and remove the intake manifold.
  4.
  5. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and from their bracket on the valve cover.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  8.

5M-GE Engine

  1. Unscrew the eight mounting bolts and remove the intake manifold.
  2.
