Fig. Fig. 1: Cutaway view of the cold start injector

During cold engine starting, the cold start injector is used to supply additional fuel to the intake manifold to aid in initial start-up. The opening and closing of the injector is determined by the Start Injector Time Switch. when the engine coolant temperature falls below a certain point, the switch is tripped, then opens the cold start injector. As the engine coolant warms up, the switch will eventually close the injector.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Celica
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the cold start injector union bolt(s) on the delivery pipe.
  4.

Before removing the union bolt, place a suitable container under it to catch any escaping fuel.

  1. Disconnect the wiring connector at the injector.
  2.
  3. Unscrew the two mounting bolts, then remove the cold start injector from the air intake chamber.
  4.
  5. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  6.

Always use a new gasket when reinstalling the injector.

  1. Start the engine and check for any leaks.
  2.

Fig. Fig. 5: Remove the air intake chamber from the engine

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.
  3. Remove the air intake connector at the throttle body.
  4.
  5. Tag and disconnect all hoses from the air intake chamber, and all hoses from the throttle body which may interfere in intake chamber removal.
  6.
  7. Tag and disconnect the accelerator linkage and cable from the throttle body.
  8.
  9. Tag and disconnect the cold start injector wire, throttle position sensor wire, and the two wiring connectors near the distributor.
  10.
  11. Remove the air intake chamber stay and the vacuum pipe sub-assembly.
  12.
  13. Loosen the EGR pipe connecting nut. Disconnect the cold start fuel hose from the delivery pipe.
  14.
  15. Remove the air intake chamber from the cylinder head, and remove the cold start injector from the intake chamber.
  16.
  17. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Always use new gaskets under the cold start injector.
  18.
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.

INSPECTION

  1. Unplug the wiring connector and remove the cold start injector from the air intake chamber.
  2.

Do not disconnect the fuel line.

  1. Using Special Tool 09843-30011, connect one end to the injector and the other to the battery.
  2.
  3. Remove the rubber cap from the Fuel Pump Check terminal and short both terminals with a wire.
  4.
  5. Hold the injector over a suitable container, then turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  6.
  7. Check that the fuel splash pattern is even and V-shaped.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the test probes from the battery and check that the fuel does not leak from the injector tip any more than one drop per minute.
  10.
  11. Remove the Special Tool and reinstall the cold start injector.
  12.
  13. Check the resistance of the injector. It should be 3-5 ohms.
  14.
  15. If the cold start injector did not operate properly in any of these tests, it will require replacement.
