Electric Fuel Pump

All 1983-85 Celicas and all Supras are equipped with an electric fuel pump. The pump on the 1985 Celica and the 1984-85 Supra is located inside the fuel tank, while the one on the 1983-84 Celica and the 1979-83 Supra is attached to the front side of the tank.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1979-83 Supra and 1983-84 Celica

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the fuel pump wiring connector inside the trunk.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the four bolts and remove the service hole cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and plug the fuel pump inlet hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt at the fuel pump bracket.
  10.  
  11. Raise the rear of the car and support it with jackstands.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuel pipe bracket. Slowly loosen, then disconnect the fuel pump outlet hose.
  14.  
  15. Unscrew the two remaining fuel pump bracket bolts, then remove the pump.
  16.  
  17. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for any leaks.

1984-85 Supra and 1985 Celica

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fuel from the tank, then remove the fuel tank.
  4.  
  5. Remove the seven bolts, then pull the fuel pump bracket up and out of the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two nuts, then tag and disconnect the wires at the fuel pump.
  8.  
  9. Pull the fuel pump out of the lower side of the bracket. Disconnect the pump from the fuel hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rubber cushion and the clip. Disconnect the fuel pump filter from the pump.
  12.  
  13. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.

Supra and 1983-85 Celica

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but don't start the engine.
  2.  
  3. On the Supra, remove the rubber cap from the fuel pump check connector and, using a piece of wire or paper clip, short terminals FP and +B . On the Celica, there is no rubber cap; just unplug the connector, then short the terminals.
  4.  
  5. Check that there is pressure in the hose to the cold start injector.
  6.  

At this time you should be able to hear the fuel return noise from the pressure regulator.

  1. If no pressure can be felt in the line, check the fuses and all other related electrical connections. If everything is all right, the fuel pump will probably require replacement.
  2.  
  3. Remove the service wire, reinstall the rubber cap and turn off the ignition switch.
