Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF. Properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Place a catch-pan under the joint to be disconnected. A large quantity of fuel may be released when the joint is opened.
  4.
  5. Wear eye or full face protection.
  6.
  7. Place a shop towel over the area and slowly loosen the joint using a wrench of the correct size. Use a back-up wrench if needed.
  8.
  9. Allow the fuel left in the line to bleed off slowly before fully disconnecting the joint.
  10.
  11. Plug the opened lines immediately to prevent fuel spillage or the entry of dirt.
  12.
  13. Dispose of the released fuel properly.
  14.
  15. After connecting fuel lines, connect the negative battery cable and start the engine.
  16.
  17. Check for leaks and repair as needed.
