REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1971-77 Models
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Detach the heater control cables at the heater box.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the steering column clamping nuts and lower the column.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the instrument panel screws and tilt the panel forward.
  8.  
  9. Detach the speedometer cable and wiring connectors. Remove the entire panel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instruments from the panel as required.
  12.  
  13. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  14.  

1978-81 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuse box cover from under the left side of the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the heater control knobs.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable tool, pry off the heater control panel.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the cluster finish panel retaining screws and pull out the bottom of the panel.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the two electrical connectors and unhook the speedometer cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster.
  14.  
  15. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

1982-85 Models
  1. Disconnect battery cable from negative terminal of battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the console box. Remove the shift lever knob on manual transaxle equipped vehicles. Remove the eight screws and the console box hole cover. Disconnect the connectors and remove the console box.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment door.
  10.  
  11. Remove the No. 2 instrument panel speaker panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 1 speaker mounting bracket by removing the one bolt, removing the one or two screws then unplugging the connector and removing the bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the glove compartment door reinforcement.
  16.  
  17. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel speaker panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine hood release lever.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel finish lower panel and then remove the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  22.  
  23. On the ST model, remove the instrument panel finish lower center panel:
    1. Remove the ash tray.
    2.  
    3. Remove the eight screws.
    4.  
    5. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
    6.  
    7. Unplug the connectors and remove the panel.
    8.

  25. On the GT and GTS models, remove the instrument panel finish lower center panel:
    1. Remove the ash tray.
    2.  
    3. Remove the six screws.
    4.  
    5. Cover the shift position upper housing with a clean shop rag.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and remove the panel.
    8.

  27. Remove the radio.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear window defogger switch and hazard switch by prying off the defogger switch and hazard switch and unplugging the connectors.
  30.  
  31. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel by removing the four screws and pulling out the panel.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the speedometer cable by pushing on the pawls on the right and left of the meter bracket. Pull the meter bracket from the safety pad.
  34.  
  35. Remove the combination meter by removing the four screws and unplugging the connectors.
  36.  

To install:
  1. Connect the harness connectors and speedometer cable to the meter. Install the combination meter and secure with 4 mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the instrument cluster finish panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear window defogger switch and hazard switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio, making sure to engage the electrical connectors and antenna lead prior to installation.
  8.  
  9. On the GT and GT-S models, install the instrument panel finish lower center panel.
  10.  
  11. On the ST model, install the instrument panel finish lower center panel.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine hood release lever and the glove compartment door reinforcement.
  14.  
  15. Install the No. 1 speaker mounting bracket and the No. 2 instrument panel speaker panel.
  16.  
  17. Install the console box and remaining components removed during disassembly.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation of all disturbed components.
