REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1971-81 Models
  1. Place the gear shift in Neutral. Loosen the retaining screws and remove the center console.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim boot at the base of the shift lever and then the boot underneath it on the shift tower.
  4.  
  5. Unscrew the four shifter lever plate retaining screws. Remove the shift lever assembly and the gasket.
  6.  

Cover the hole with a clean cloth to prevent anything from falling into the transmission case.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner with all its hoses.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the accelerator torque rod at the carburetor.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the clutch hydraulic line support bracket from the fire wall.
  8.  
  9. Tag and disconnect all wires leading from the starter and then remove the starter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Raise the car and support it with jackstands.
  14.  
  15. Drain the transmission oil.
  16.  
  17. Detach the exhaust pipe from the manifold and then remove the exhaust pipe support bracket.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the driveshaft from the end of the transmission.
  20.  

It will be necessary to plug the end of the transmission to avoid spilling oil. Use an old yoke, or, if one is not available, cover it with a plastic bag secured by a rubber band.

  1. Remove both stiffener plates from the transmission housing.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the back-up light switch from the bottom, left side of the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the right side of the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the clutch return spring, loosen the two mounting bolts and remove the clutch release (slave) cylinder. Position it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Jack up the transmission slightly to remove the weight from the rear support.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ground strap and the rubber exhaust hanger from the rear support member.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the eight mounting bolts and then remove the rear support.
  14.  
  15. Remove the remaining transmission-to-engine bolts and remove the transmission down and toward the rear.
  16.  
  17. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. When installing, please not the following:
    1. Apply a light coating of multi-purpose grease to the input shaft end, the input shaft splines, the clutch release bearing and the driveshaft end.
    2.  
    3. Use a clutch guide tool to align the clutch disc with the transmission input shaft spline.
    4.  
    5. Be sure that the clutch release cylinder pushrod is properly aligned with the clutch fork.
    6.  
    7. Be sure that the felt dust protector and the washer are on the end of the speedometer cable before tightening it.
    8.  
    9. Be sure to refill the transmission housing with the specified amount of gear lubricant.

  1. Place the gear shift in Neutral. Loosen the retaining screws and remove the center console.

  3. Remove the trim boot at the base of the shift lever and then the boot underneath it on the shift tower.

  5. Unscrew the four shifter lever plate retaining screws. Remove the shift lever assembly and the gasket.
  6.  

Cover the hole with a clean cloth to prevent anything from falling into the transmission case.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant from the upper tank, and remove the upper coolant hose.
  4.  
  5. Jack up the car and safely support it with jackstands. Drain the transmission oil.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the steering gear (rack) housing and disconnect the housing from the steering linkage and steering column assembly. Leave the steering fluid lines connected, and suspend the housing from the front of the car as shown.
  8.  
  9. Have a rag handy before disconnecting the driveshaft from the transmission. Remove the driveshaft and immediately plug the transmission extension housing with the rag.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust pipe clamp bolt.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speedometer cable and the back-up light switch connector from the transmission housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clutch slave cylinder.
  16.  
  17. Tag and disconnect all wires leading from the starter and remove the starter.
  18.  
  19. Jack up the transmission enough to take weight off of the transmission rear support.
  20.  
  21. Remove the transmission support, and unbolt the bell housing from the engine.
  22.  
  23. Using a hydraulic floor jack as an aid, ease the transmission down while pulling it towards the rear of the car.
  24.  
  25. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Follow the installation notes included in the preceding procedure. Tighten the bell housing-to-engine bolts to 37-57 ft. lbs. (50-77 Nm).
