Steering Gear

Though most vehicles covered by this information are equipped with a rack and pinion steering assembly, some early models may be equipped with a steering gear. If so equipped, the gear oil level should be checked at least every 15,000 miles. The filler plug on these models is located on top of the gear housing. The oil level should be kept even with the bottom of the filler hole or slightly lower. Use standard GL-4 hypoid type gear oil SAE 1.
