Sending Unit Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Relieve the fuel pressure. Remove the filler cap. Using a siphon or pump, drain the fuel from the tank and store it in a proper metal container with a tight cap. If equipped with a drain plug drain the fuel tank by removing the drain plug.

  3. Remove the fuel tank assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the necessary service procedures.
  4.  
  5. With the fuel tank drained and on a suitable work bench remove the fuel sending unit retaining screws and carefully lift the the sending unit from the fuel tank.
  6.  
  7. While the tank is out and disassembled, inspect it for any signs of rust, leakage or metal damage. If any problem is found, replace the tank.

To install:
  1. Install the sending unit and gasket in the fuel tank assembly. Torque the retaining bolts to 30 inch lbs. (3 Nm). When reassembling, ALWAYS replace the sealing gasket with a new one. Also replace rubber parts showing any sign of deterioration.

  3. Install the fuel tank assembly to the vehicle. Refer to the necessary service procedures.
  4.  
  5. Install drain plug if necessary. Using a funnel, pour the fuel that was drained earlier, from its container and into the fuel filler.
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel filler cap.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check carefully for any sign of leakage around the tank and lines.
