REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-83 RWD

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

Working from inside of the car, perform the following:

  1. Place the gear selector in N . Remove the center console, if so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim boot at the base of the shift lever and the boot underneath it on the shift tower.
  4.  
  5. On all Corolla models (except 1600):
    1. Unfasten the snapring from the base of the shift lever.
    2.  
    3. Withdraw the council spring and the shift lever itself.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. On Corolla 1600 models only:
    1. Unfasten the four shift lever plate retaining screws.
    2.  
    3. Withdraw the shift lever assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove the gasket.
    6.  

  8.  

Cover the hole with a clean cloth to prevent anything from falling into the transmission case

Working in the engine compartment perform the following:

  1. Drain the cooling system and disconnect the cable from the negative side of the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator hoses.
  4.  
  5. On Corolla 1200 models, only:
    1. Unfasten the back-up lamp switch connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the engine fan.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. On Corolla 1600 and 1800 models, only:
    1. Remove the air cleaner, complete with hoses.
    2.  
    3. Unfasten the accelerator torque rod at the carburetor.
    4.  
    5. Remove the clutch hydraulic line support bracket.
    6.  
    7. Remove the starter assembly from the left side of the engine.
    8.  
    9. Remove the upper left hand clutch housing bolt, from the flat at the top of the clutch housing.
    10.

Be sure that the car is securely supported with jackstands. You will be working underneath it

  1. Drain the transmission oil.
  2.  
  3. Detach the exhaust pipe from the manifold and remove the exhaust pipe support bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driveshaft.
  6.  

It will be necessary to plug the opening in the end of the transmission with an old yoke or if none is available, cover it with a plastic bag secured by a rubber band

  1. Unfasten the speedometer cable from the right side of the transmission.
  2.  
  3. On Corolla 1600 and 1800 models, only:
    1. Remove the clutch release cylinder assembly from the transmission and tie it aside, so that it is out of the way.
    2.  
    3. Unplug the back-up lamp switch connector.
    4.

  5. Support the front of the transmission with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the engine rear mounts. Remove the rear crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the jack from under the transmission.
  10.  
  11. On Corolla 1600 and 1800 models, unbolt the clutch housing from the engine and withdraw the transmission assembly.
  12.  

Remove the brace, if so equipped

  1. Perform the following on Corolla 1200 model, before removing the transmission:
    1. Remove the cotter pin from the clutch release linkage.
    2.  
    3. Remove the clutch release cable.
    4.  
    5. Separate the clutch housing from the engine by removing the bolts which secure it.
    6.

To install:
  1. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, but remember to perform the following during installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coating of multipurpose grease to the input shaft end, input shaft spline, clutch release bearing, and driveshaft end.
  4.  
  5. On Corolla 1200 model, apply multipurpose grease to the ball on the end of the gearshaft lever assembly and clutch release cable end.
  6.  

Install the clutch housing-to-engine bolts in two or three stages

  1. Fill the transmission and cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the clutch.
  4.  
  5. Check to ensure that the back-up lamps come on when R is selected.
  6.  

1984 and Later RWD
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the distributor pinch bolt and turn the distributor body so it doesn't come in contact with the dash panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the center console box.
  6.  
  7. Remove the trim boot at the base of the shift lever and the boot underneath it on the shift tower.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the four shift lever plate retaining screws, withdraw the shift lever and remove the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Raise the front of the vehicle and drain the transmission fluid.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect and remove the front exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  14.  
  15. Matchmark the two flanges, remove the four bolts and nuts, then disconnect the driveshaft from the differential.
  16.  
  17. Remove the center support bearing and its heat shield from the vehicle underbody.
  18.  
  19. Remove the driveshaft.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the speedometer cable and position it out of the way.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector at the switch.
  24.  
  25. Remove the clutch release cylinder.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the two electrical leads and remove the starter.
  28.  
  29. Raise the transmission slightly so as to remove the weight from the rear support.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear engine mount. Remove the stiffener plate and then remove the transmission mounting bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the transmission down and toward the rear.
  34.  

To install:
  1. Apply a light coating of multipurpose grease to the input shaft end, input shaft spline, clutch release bearing, and driveshaft end.
  2.  
  3. Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Please note the following:
    1. Align the input shaft spline with the clutch disc and then push the transmission fully into position. Install the two upper set bolts and tighten them to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the rear engine mount to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the transmission and stiffener plate mounting bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    6.  
    7. When reconnecting the driveshaft to the differential, be sure that the matchmarks made earlier align and then tighten the mounting bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).

  5. Fill the transmission and cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the clutch.
  8.  
  9. Check to ensure that the back-up lamps come on when R is selected.
