Neutral Safety Switch

The neutral safety switch in addition to preventing the vehicle from starting with the transaxle in gear also actuates the back-up warning lights.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



A131 Transaxle
  1. Disconnect the transaxle control cable from the control shaft lever.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle control shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt and remove the neutral safety switch.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the neutral safety switch.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle control shaft lever.
  6.  
  7. Connect the transaxle control cable.
  8.  
  9. Test drive the vehicle for operation.
  10.  

A240L and A241H Transaxles

See Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Using a flat bladed tool, unstake the nut stopper.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut, nut stopper and packeing.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two bolts and neutral safety switch.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the neutral safety switch to the manual valve shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the packing, nut stopper and nut. Tighten the nut to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.

  1. Temporarily install the manual shift lever.
  2.  
  3. Turn the lever clockwise until it stops, then turn it counterclockwise three notches.

  1. Remove the manual shift lever.
  2.  
  3. Align the groove and neutral basic line. Install and tighten the two bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).

  1. Using a flatbladded tool, stake the nut with the nut stopper.

  1. Install the manual shift lever with the washer, and tighten the nut.
  2.  
  3. Test drive the vehicle and inspect operation.
  4.  

A245E Transaxle

See Figures 6 through 10

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. If necessary, remove the No. 2 engine under cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the neutral start switch harness.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual shift lever.
  6.

  1. Unstake the lock nut and remove the manual shift lever.
  2.  
  3. Remove the neutral start switch with the seal gasket.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the neutral start switch making sure that the lip of the seal gasket is facing inward.

  1. Install the locknut and tighten to 61-108 inch lbs. (7-12 Nm). Stake the nut with the locking plate.
  2.  
  3. Temporarily install the manual shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Turn the lever counterclockwise until it stops, then turn it clockwise 2 notches.

  1. Remove the manual shift lever.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the neutral start switch. Align the groove of the neutral basic line. Install and tighten the 2 bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).

  1. Install the manuals shift lever. Attach the electrical wiring.
  2.  
  3. Connect the transaxle shift cable and install the clip.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the transaxle shift cable.
  6.  
  7. Check the operation of the switch and adjust as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the No. 2 engine under cover if removed.
  10.  

ADJUSTMENT



If the engine starts with the shift selector in any position except Park or Neutral, adjust the switch as follows:

  1. Loosen the two neutral start switch retaining bolts and move the shift selector to the Neutral range.
  2.  
  3. Align the groove and the neutral basic line. Maintain the alignment and tighten the bolts to 4-9 ft. lbs. (5-12 Nm).
