REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-92 Models

See Figures 1 through 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Remove the steering wheel. Disarm air bag system if so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt and remove the right and left front pillar garnish trim.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear then front floor console boxes. Disconnect the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine hood release lever.
  8.  
  9. Next, detach the lower finish No. 1 trim panel. Remove the No. 1 speaker panel. Pry out the two panel hole covers. Pull pout the lower finish panel No. 1, then disconnect the speaker wires. On models with A/C, disconnect the No. 5 heater register duct.

  11. Remove the steering column cover.
  12.

  1. Remove the center cluster finish panel. Disconnect the wiring and remove the switches.

  1. Remove the cluster finish panel and detach the wiring to the unit.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radio and disconnect the antenna wire and harness from behind the unit..
  4.  
  5. Remove the stereo opening cover or center differential control switch if so equipped. Remove any wiring from components.
  6.

  1. Remove the combination meter assembly. Disconnect the wiring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower finish No. 2 panel with glove compartment door.
  4.  
  5. Separate the heater control assembly from the safety pad and hang it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower center finish panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzles. Be sure to tape the end of the removal tool to avoid scratching the dash components.
  10.  
  11. Remove the safety pad assembly from the vehicle. Disconnect the wiring.
  12.  

The defroster nozzle has a boss on the reverse side for clamping onto the clip on the body side. When removing, pull upward at an angle.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  

1993-97 Models

WARNING
This procedure requires the drivers and passengers air bags are to be removed from the vehicle. Refer toChapter 7for warnings and information concerning this matter.


CAUTION
On models with an airbag, wait at least 90 seconds from the time that the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the battery is disconnected before performing any further work. Refer to Drive Train for all air bag warnings.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. Remove the following components:

    Front door lower garnishes
     
    Front door scuff plates
     
    Front pillar garnishes
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Suspension & Steering .
  4.  


CAUTION
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in injury. In addition, the fasteners, screws and bolts originally used for the air bag components have a special coating on them specifically designed for use in this system. They must never be replaced with any substitutes. Anytime new fasteners are needed, replace them with the correct fasteners.

  1. Remove the following components:

    Steering column cover
     
    Shifting hole bezel
     
    Rear console box
     
    Hood lock release lever
     
    Lower finish panel
     
    Combination switch
     
    Lower panel
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box compartment door. Detach the connector cover from the compartment door.
    1. Remove the wiring from the connector cover.
    2.  
    3. Detch the wiring from the harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove the screws and bolts from the compartment.
    6.  
    7. Remove the glove box door.When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the air bag wire harness.
    8.

  5. Remove the center cluster finish lower panel. Disconnect the wiring from the panel cluster. Remove the stereo opening cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater knobs, then remove the center cluster finish panel. Unbolt and detach the radio. Remove the heater control.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cluster finish panel and combination meter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the following components:

    Finish lower center panel
     
    Cluster finish panel sub assembly
     
    Duct heater to register No. 2
     
    Side defroster nozzle No. 2

  13. Remove the passenger air bag assembly. Disconnect the wiring harness to the assembly. Remove the 4 bolts and 2 clips. Pull the air bag assembly from the dash.

CAUTION
When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from the body. In an unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. This will reduce the motion of the module if it is accidentally deployed. Never disassemble the front passenger air bag assembly.

  1. To remove the instrument panel, detach the wiring from the components. Remove the 5 bolts retaining the panel. Unbolt the junction block No. 1 and No. 4.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screw, 8 bolts and instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
