  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the accelerator torque link or the cable.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the throttle link rod at the carburetor side, then disconnect the backup light wiring at the firewall (on early models).
  6.
  7. Jack up the car and support it on stands, then drain the transmission (use a clean receptacle so that the fluid can be checked for color, smell and foreign matter).
  8.
  9. Disconnect all shift linkage.
  10.
  11. On early models, remove the cross shaft from the frame.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the throttle link rod at the transmission side and remove the speedometer cable, cooler lines and parking brake equalizer brake.
  14.
  15. Loosen the exhaust flange nuts and remove the exhaust pipe clamp and bracket.
  16.
  17. Remove the driveshaft and the rear mounting bracket, then lower the rear end of the transmission carefully.
  18.
  19. Unbolt the torque converter from the drive plate. Support the engine with a suitable jack stand and remove the seven bolts that hold the transmission to the engine.
  20.
  21. Reverse the order of the removal procedures with the following precautions:
  22.
    1. Install the drive plate and ring gear, tighten the attaching bolts to 37-43 ft. lb.
    2.
    3. After assembling the torque converter to the transmission, check the clearance, it should be about 15mm.
    4.
    5. Before installing the transmission, place the oil pump locator pin on the torque converter to facilitate installation.
    6.
    7. While rotating the crankshaft, tighten the converter attaching bolts, a little at a time.
    8.
    9. After installing the throttle connecting second rod, make sure the throttle valve lever indicator aligns with the mark on the transmission with the carburetor throttle valve fully opened. If required, adjust the rod.
    10.
    11. To install the transmission control rod correctly, move the transmission lever to N (Neutral), and the selector lever to Neutral. Fill the transmission. Run the engine at idle speed and apply the brakes while moving the selector lever through all positions, then return it to Neutral.
    12.
    13. After warming the engine, move the selector lever through all positions, then back to Neutral, and check the fluid level. Fill as necessary.
    14.
    15. Adjust the engine idle to 550-650 rpm with the selector lever at Drive. Road test the vehicle.
    16.
    17. With the selector lever at 2 or Drive, check the point at which the transmission shifts. Check for shock, noise and slipping with the selector lever in all positions. Check for leaks from the transmission.
    18.

  1. Perform Steps 1-3 of the 3-speed Toyoglide removal procedure.
  2.
  3. Remove the upper starter mounting nuts.
  4.
  5. Raise the car and support it securely with jackstands. Drain the transmission.
  6.
  7. Remove the lower starter mounting bolt and lay the starter along side of the engine. Don't let it hang by the wires.
  8.
  9. Unbolt the parking brake equalizer support.
  10.
  11. Matchmark the driveshaft and the companion flange, to ensure correct installation. Remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the companion flange.
  12.
  13. Slide the driveshaft straight back and out of the transmission. Use a spare U-joint yoke or tie a plastic bag over the end of the transmission to keep any fluid from dripping out.
  14.
  15. Remove the bolts from the cross-shaft body bracket, the cotter pin from the manual lever, and the cross-shaft socket from the transmission.
  16.
  17. Remove the exhaust pipe bracket from the torque converter bell housing.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the transmission and remove the line bracket from the bell housing.
  20.
  21. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission.
  22.
  23. Unbolt both support braces from the bell housing.
  24.
  25. Use a transmission jack to raise the transmission slightly.
  26.
  27. Unbolt the rear crossmember and lower the transmission about 76mm.
  28.
  29. Pry the two rubber torque converter access plugs out of their holes at the back of the engine.
  30.
  31. Remove the six torque converter mounting bolts through the access hole. Rotate the engine with the crankshaft pulley.
  32.
  33. Cut the head off a bolt to make a guide pin for the torque converter. Install the pin on the converter.
  34.
  35. Remove the converter bell housing-to-engine bolts.
  36.
  37. Push on the end of the guide pin in order to remove the converter with the transmission. Remove the transmission rearward and then bring it out from under the car.
  38.

WARNING
Don't catch the throttle cable during removal.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to note the following, however:
  2.
    1. Install the two long bolts on the upper converter housing and tighten them to 36-58 ft. lbs.
    2.
    3. Install the converter-to-flex plate bolts finger-tight, and then tighten them with a torque wrench to 11-16 ft. lbs.
    4.
    5. When installing the speedometer cable, make sure that the felt dust protector and washer are on the cable end.
    6.
    7. Tighten the cooling line and exhaust pipe bracket mounting bolts to 37-58 ft. lbs. Tighten the cooling lines to 14-22 ft. lbs.
    8.
    9. Align the matchmarks made on the driveshaft and the companion flange during removal. Tighten the driveshaft mounting bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs.
    10.
    11. Be sure to install the oil pan drain plug. Tighten it to 11-14 ft. lbs.
    12.
    13. Adjust the throttle cable.
    14.
    15. Fill the transmission to the proper capacity.
    16.
    17. Road test the car and check for leaks.
    18.
