REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative (ground) cable from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wires/cables connected to the starter motor.
  4.  
  5. On some models it may be necessary to remove the air cleaner, splash shields or linkage that is in the way of easy access to the starter motor.
  6.  
  7. Loosen and remove the starter motor mounting nuts/bolts while supporting the motor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

Solenoid and Brush Replacement
DIRECT DRIVE TYPE

The starter must be removed from the car in order to perform this operation.

  1. Disconnect the field coil lead from the solenoid terminal.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the solenoid retaining screws. Remove the solenoid by tilting it upward and withdrawing it.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the end frame bearing cover screws and remove the cover.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten and withdraw the thru-bolts. Remove the commutator endframe.
  8.  
  9. Withdraw the brushes from their holder if they are to be replaced.
  10.  
  11. Check the brush length against the specification in the Battery and Starter Specifications chart. Replace the brushes with new ones if required.
  12.  
  13. Dress the new brushes with emery cloth so that they will make proper contact.
  14.  
  15. Use a spring scale to check the brush spring tensions against the specification in the chart. Replace the springs if they do not meet specification.
  16.  
  17. Assembly is the reverse order of disassembly. Remember to pack the end bearing cover with multipurpose grease before installing it.

GEAR REDUCTION TYPE

The starter must be removed from the car in order to perform this operation.

  1. Disconnect the solenoid lead terminal.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the two bolts on the starter housing and separate the field frame from the solenoid. Remove the O-ring and felt dust seal.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the two screws and separate the starter drive from the solenoid.
  6.  
  7. Withdraw the clutch and gears. Remove the ball from the clutch shaft bore or solenoid.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brushes from the holder.
  10.  
  11. Measure the brush length and compare it to the figure in the Battery and Starter Specifications chart. Replace the brushes with new ones if they are too short.
  12.  
  13. Replace any worn or chipped gears.
  14.  
  15. Assembly is performed in the reverse order of disassembly. Lubricate all gears and bearings with high temperature grease. Grease the ball before inserting it in the clutch shaft bore. Align the tab on the brush holder with the notch on the field frame. Check the positive (+) brush leads to ensure that they aren't grounded. Align the solenoid marks with the field frame bolt anchors.

Starter Drive Replacement
DIRECT DRIVE STARTER

The starter must be removed from car.

  1. Loosen the locknut or bolt and remove the connection going to the terminal of the solenoid. Remove the securing screws and remove the solenoid.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front dust cover, E-ring, thrust washers, and the two screws retaining the brush holder assembly. Remove the brush cover thru-bolts and remove the cover assembly.
  4.  
  5. Lift the brushes to free them from the commutator and remove the brush holder.
  6.  
  7. Tap the yoke assembly lightly with a wooden hammer and remove it from the field and case.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut and bolt which serve as a pin for the shift lever, carefully retaining the associated washers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the armature assembly and shift lever.
  12.  
  13. Push the stop ring (located at the end of the armature shaft) toward the clutch and remove the snapring. Remove the stop ring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clutch assembly from the armature shaft.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the clutch assembly onto the armature shaft.
  2.  
  3. Put the stop ring on and hold it toward the clutch while installing the snapring.
  4.  
  5. Install the armature assembly and shift lever into the yoke.
  6.  
  7. Install the washers, nut and bolt which serve as a shift lever pivot pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the field back onto the yoke assembly.
  10.  
  11. Lift the brushes and install the brush holder. Install the brush cover and thru-bolts.
  12.  
  13. Replace the brush holder set screws, the thrust washers, E-ring, and the dust cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the solenoid. Reconnect the wire to the terminal of the solenoid.
  16.  

GEAR REDUCTION TYPE
  1. Remove the starter.
  2.  
  3. Remove the solenoid and the shift lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts securing the center housing to the front cover and separate the parts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gears and the starter drive.
  8.  


WARNING
Be careful not to lose the steel ball installed in the drive. Remember to reinstall when replacing the drive.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
