Shock Absorbers

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Remove the hub cap and loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the car and support it with jackstands.
  4.  


CAUTION
Be sure that the vehicle is supported securely. Remember, you will be working underneath it.

  1. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the double nuts at the top end of the shock absorber. Remove the cushions and cushion retainers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two bolts which secure the lower end of the shock absorber to the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Inspect and test the shock as detailed below.
  10.  
  11. Installation of the shock is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the securing nuts and bolts to the following specifications:

    Upper securing nuts: 14-22 ft. lb.
     
    Lower mounting bolts: 11-16 ft. lb.

INSPECTION



With the shock absorber removed from the vehicle, examine it for the following:



Fluid leaks.
 
Damaged housing.
 
Weakness.
 
Wear.
 
Bent or cracked studs.
 

Test shock absorber operation by placing it in an upright position. Push and pull on the shock. If the shock presents little resistance or binds, replace it with a new one.
