  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuse box block attachment bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the parking brake bracket.
  6.  
  7. Detach the fuel gauge/warning light pod wiring harness and remove its mounting screws. Pull out the pod.
  8.  
  9. Perform Step 4 for the clock.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speedometer wiring harness and cable.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the wiring harness clamp then push the harness toward the front.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the speedometer attaching screws and remove the speedometer.
  16.  

Cover the lens with a cloth during removal.

  1. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  

1974-82 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two instrument cluster surround securing screws. One is located above the speedometer lens and the other above the fuel gauge on hardtops. On sedans and wagons the screws are above the combination gauge and clock.
  4.  
  5. Remove the side air outlet control knob and the clock setting knob.
  6.  
  7. Lift off the trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the five screws which secure the instrument cluster to the instrument panel support.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speedometer cable and the instrument cluster wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Lift out the cluster assembly.
  14.  
  15. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

Mark II
4 CYLINDER

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the package shelf from beneath the dashboard.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuse block bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower left side crash pad and the left-hand trim molding.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the instrument cluster securing screws and tip the cluster slightly forward.
  10.  
  11. Detach the cluster wiring harness and the speedometer cable. Remove the cluster.
  12.  

If the car is not equipped with a radio, it is much easier to remove the glove box and then remove the instrument cluster through the opening.

  1. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  

6 CYLINDER
  1. Remove the housing from the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control knobs from the heater and radio.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the heater control floodlight and pull it out slightly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nine screws which attach the cluster surround.
  8.  
  9. Push the upper crash pad away from the trim panel and slightly pull out the panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the heater control floodlight from the trim panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the trim panel toward the right.
  14.  
  15. Remove the instrument panel lower garnish moldings. Remove the ash tray.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater control assembly.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the dash side ventilator mounting screws.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radio and tape deck, if so equipped.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater control bracket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the six cluster securing bolts and lift it out slightly.
  26.  
  27. Detach the speedometer cable and all of the wiring harnesses. Remove the cluster.
  28.  
  29. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  30.  

Have the heater control floodlight installed in the cluster surround prior to its installation.

Crown 2M Engine

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Detach the heater control cables at the heater box.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the steering column clamping nuts and lower the column.
  6.  


WARNING
Be careful when handling the column. It is the collapsible type. Cover the column shroud with a cloth to protect it.

  1. Loosen the instrument panel screws and tilt the panel forward.
  2.  
  3. Detach the speedometer cable and wiring connectors. Remove the entire panel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instruments from the panel as required.
  6.  
  7. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  8.  

Crown 4M Engine, Cressida
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air duct from the center air outlet.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio trim panel from the center instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the screws and remove the instrument cluster trim panel. Remove the cluster housing.
  10.  
  11. Detach the speedometer drive cable and wiring connectors by reaching through the radio opening.
  12.  
  13. Withdraw the instrument cluster.
  14.  
  15. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
