  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2.  


CAUTION
Be sure that the vehicle is securely supported. Do not support it by the lower control arms.

  1. Remove the gravel shields if they prevent access to the steering linkage.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the nut and, using a puller, disconnect the pitman arm from the sector shaft.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the idler arm support securing bolts and remove the support from the frame.
  6.  
  7. Detach the tie rod ends with a puller after removing the cotter pins and castellated nuts.
  8.  

On Mark II 6 cylinder models, it is necessary to remove the disc brake caliper in order to 0gain access to the tie rod ends. See for this procedure.

  1. Remove the steering linkage as an assembly.
  2.  
  3. Installation is performed inthe reverse order of removal. Noge the following however:

    1. Tighten the linkage parts to the torque figures given in the Steering Linkage Torque Specifications chart.
    2.  
    3. Align the marks on pitman arm and sector shaft before installing the pitman arm.
    4.  
    5. The self locking nut used on some models, onthe idler arm, may be reused if it cannot be turned by hand when fitted to the bolt.
    6.  
    7. Adjust the toe-in specifications after completing the steering linkage installation procedure.
