Coil Spring and Shock Absorber

  1. Raise and support the rear axle housing and frame safely. Be sure to leave the jack under the rear axle. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake hose clip. Disconnect the stabilizer bar end bolt, cushion and retainer from the suspension arm and remove the stabilizer bar end.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive shaft on the rear axle shaft side only. Leave the jack under the suspension arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt holding the shock absorber to the rear suspension arm and disconnect the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. On models without the TEMS system do the following: Remove the shock absorber head cover and locknuts, and remove the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. On models with the TEMS system do the following:
  12.  
    1. Remove and inspect the actuator.
    2.  
    3. Hold the actuator bracket, remove the shock absorber nuts and remove the shock absorber.
    4.  

  13. Start to lower the rear axle. Be careful not to pull the brake line and parking brake cable. While lowering the rear axle housing, remove the coil spring and the upper and lower insulators.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Put the lower insulator on the axle housing. Put the upper insulator on the coil spring. Install the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Check the position of the lower insulator, by jacking up the rear axle housing and checking to see that the lower insulator is installed correctly. If the insulator in not installed correctly, reinstall the coil spring.
  4.  
  5. On vehicles not equipped with the TEMS system do the following:
  6.  
    1. Connect the shock absorber to the body with the retaining nuts.
    2.  
    3. Hold the shaft and tighten the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4.  

  7. On vehicles equipped with the TEMS system do the following:
  8.  
    1. Install the cushions, retainers and actuator bracket to the shock absorber with the retaining nut.
    2.  
    3. Hold the bracket and tighten the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Install the actuator.
    4.  

  9. Connect the shock absorber lower nut and tighten it to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the stabilizer bar end to the rear suspension. Tighten the bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear driveshaft assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake hose clips. Install the rear wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the jack stands and bounce the car to stabilize the suspension.
