  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the right seat.
  2.
  3. Remove the engine service hole cover.
  4.
  5. Remove the number one spark plug. Place a finger over the spark plug hole and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to Top Dead Center (TDC). When there is pressure felt on the finger at the spark plug hole, this will be TDC of the compression stroke on number one cylinder. If not, repeat the procedure. Make sure the timing marks are set at 0. Install the number one spark plug.
  6.
  7. Disconnect and tag (if necessary) all ignition wires and vacuum hoses from the IIA distributor. Do not remove the high tension wire from the distributor cap.
  8.
  9. Make an alignment mark on the base of the distributor and the engine block. Remove the IIA distributor hold-down bolt and remove the distributor.
  10.
  11. Remove the IIA distributor cap, gasket and rotor. Remove the igniter dust cover and remove the ignition coil dust cover.
  12.
  13. Remove the ignition coil by removing the nuts and disconnecting the wires from the terminals of the ignition coil. Remove the four ignition coil retaining screws and remove the coil.
  14.
  15. Remove the IIA wire with the condenser. Remove the igniter screws and nuts and disconnect the wires from the terminals of the igniter. Remove the two igniter retaining screws and remove the igniter.
  16.

To install:

  1. Install the igniter assembly along with the igniter.
  2.
  3. Install the igniter screws and nuts and reconnect the wires to the terminals of the igniter.
  4.
  5. Install the IIA wire with the condenser.
  6.
  7. Install the ignition coil and the ignition coil retaining screws.
  8.
  9. Install the ignition coil wire connections and their retaining nuts.
  10.
  11. Install the igniter dust cover and install the ignition coil dust cover.
  12.
  13. Align the slot on the top end of the drive rotor.
  14.
  15. Align the drilled mark on the driven gear with the groove on the distributor housing. Insert the distributor, aligning the stationary flange center with the bolt hole in the head. If needed, use the alignment mark made earlier to ease in the installation. Tighten the bolts.
  16.
  17. Install the IIA distributor and the hold-down bolt.
  18.
  19. Reconnect all the ignition wires and vacuum hoses to the IIA distributor. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Connect a timing light and tachometer.
  20.
  21. Start the engine and set the ignition timing. If the engine is hard to start, have someone turn the distributor left and right very slowly until the engine starts. Once this has happened, use your timing light to readjust the timing properly. Recheck the idle speed adjustment.
  22.
  23. Install the engine service hole cover and install the right seat.

  9. Make an alignment mark on the base of the distributor and the engine block. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and remove the distributor.
  10.

To install:

  1. Align the slot on the top end of the drive rotor.
  2.
  3. Align the drilled mark on the driven gear with the groove on the distributor housing. Insert the distributor, aligning the stationary flange center with the bolt hole in the head. If needed, use the alignment mark made earlier to ease in the installation. Tighten the bolts.
  4.
  5. Install the IIA distributor and the hold-down bolt.
  6.
  7. Reconnect all the ignition wires and vacuum hoses to the IIA distributor. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Connect a timing light and tachometer.
  8.
  9. Start the engine and set the ignition timing. If the engine is hard to start, have some one turn the distributor left and right very slowly until the engine starts. Once this has happened, use your timing light to readjust the timing properly. Recheck the idle speed adjustment.
  10.
  11. Install the engine service hole cover and install the right seat.
