REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



5M-GE Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Drain the oil and cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Mark any disconnected lines and/or hoses for easy reassembly. Remove the oil level gauge.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator. Loosen the drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fan shroud bolts. Remove the 4 fluid coupling flange attaching nuts, then remove the fluid coupling along with the fan and the fan shroud.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine undercover. Remove the exhaust pipe clamp bolt from the exhaust pipe stay.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 stiffener plates from the exhaust pipe. If equipped with manual transmission, remove the clutch housing undercover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 4 engine mount bolts from each side of the engine.
  14.  
  15. Place a jack under the transmission and raise the engine about 1 3 / 4 in. (45mm).
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Remove the oil pan from the engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump union bolt and nut and disconnect the oil pump outlet.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump mounting bolt and remove the oil pump.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump and mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 15-17 ft. lbs. (20-23 Nm). It may be a good idea to prime the pump with clean engine oil before installing it onto the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pipe with gasket, lock washer and union nut. Tighten the oil pipe union bolt 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-39 Nm) and the union nut to 26-32 ft. lbs. (35-44 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Apply a suitable silicone sealer to the new oil pan gasket.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan over the block, install the retaining bolts and tighten the bolts to 57-82 inch lbs. (5-10 Nm). Lower the engine and install the 4 motor mount nuts.
  8.  
  9. Install the flywheel housing under cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the exhaust pipe clamp bolt to the pipe stay bracket.
  12.  
  13. Install the 2 stiffener plates. Install the engine undercover assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the fan shroud together with the fluid coupling (fan clutch) to the engine compartment. Install the fan clutch on the pulley with the 4 nuts. Install the 4 fan shroud bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the drive belt and adjust the fan belt to obtain the proper tension.
  18.  
  19. Connect the upper radiator hose. Install the air connector pipe with the air cleaner hoses.
  20.  
  21. Refill the coolant system and the engine oil.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair as necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands. Remove the engine under cover and drain the oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe at the manifold and at the main tube and remove it.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the automatic transmission oil cooler pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 9 bolts, ground strap, exhaust pipe stay and the engine rear end plate and then remove the stiffener plates.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the front suspension crossmember at the front engine mounts. Position a floor jack under the crossmember, remove the remaining mounting bolts and then lower the crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pan retaining bolts and then carefully pry the pan from the cylinder block.
  16.  
  17. Raise the transmission housing with a suitable jack, be sure to place a block of wood between the jack and the transmission housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pan assembly. Thoroughly clean all components to remove all loose gasket material.
  20.  
  21. Unstake the lock washer on the oil pump outlet pump. Loosen the union nut. Remove the union bolt, lock washer, oil pump outlet pipe and gasket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pump retaining bolt and remove the oil pump.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump with the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump outlet pipe with a new lock washer, gasket, the union bolt and nut. Tighten the union bolt and nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Stake the lock washer.
  4.  
  5. Apply a suitable silicone sealer to the new oil pan gasket.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan over the block, install the retaining bolts and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front suspension member to the body and tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the 4 bolts holding the engine mounting to suspension member. Tighten the bolts 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the intermediate shaft with the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. 35 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the engine rear end plate, stiffener plates, ground strap and exhaust pipe stay bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil cooler pipe at the automatic transmission.
  18.  
  19. Install the exhaust pipe along with a new gasket and the retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Connect the exhaust pipe with the 2 bolts and nuts and torque them to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Install exhaust manifold clamp with bolt. Connect the rubber ring.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine under cover and lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Fill the engine with the proper amount of engine oil.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check for leaks. Shut the engine off and recheck the oil level, add as necessary.
  26.  

3Y-EC and 4Y-EC Engines
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left stiffener plates.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the connector of the oil sensor, if necessary remove the oil level sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Insert a suitable tool between the engine block and the oil pan, and pry the oil pan loose from the engine block. Be careful not to damage the oil pan flange. Thoroughly clean all components to remove all loose gasket material.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump retaining bolt and remove the pump.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install the oil pump, align the governor shaft protrusion of the integrated ignition assembly with the drive rotor slot of the oil pump. Install the oil pump and retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Apply a suitable silicone sealer to the new oil pan gasket. Install the oil pan over the block, install the retaining bolts and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a new gasket along with the oil level sensor with the 4 bolts. Tighten the bolts 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Install the protector of the oil level sensor with the 2 bolts. Be careful not to drop the oil level sensor when installing it.
  6.  
  7. Connect the connector of the oil level sensor.
  8.  
  9. Install the right and left stiffener plates. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Refill the engine with the proper amount of engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks. Shut the engine off and recheck the oil level, add as necessary.
  14.
