REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



The 7M-GE engine does not utilize rocker arm shafts. The valves are activated directly by the camshaft.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner hose along with air connector pipe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the PCV orifice pipe and hoses.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and remove the accelerator link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air intake connector, vacuum transmitting pipe and brackets.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and tag the spark plug cables.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cylinder head cover retaining bolts and remove the cylinder head covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker arms and lash adjusters from the cylinder head being sure to keep them in their proper order. If it is necessary to remove the camshaft housings in order to gain access to the rocker arms, use the following procedure to remove the camshaft housing.
  16.  
    1. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 camshaft housings by removing the nuts on the front side and the bolts on the rear side.
    2.  
    3. Loosen each camshaft housing nut and bolt a little at a time so as not to warp the housing.
    4.  


To install:

  1. Install the lash adjusters and rocker arms in their proper order. If the camshaft housings were removed, use the following procedure to install them.
  2.  
    1. Place new gaskets over the dowels on the cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Position the camshaft housings over the dowels on the cylinder head.
    4.  
    5. Install and tighten the housing nuts and bolts gradually in three passes until the final torque of 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) has been reached.
    6.  

  3. Install the cylinder head covers (using new gaskets) and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 22 inch lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug cables.
  6.  
  7. Install the air intake connector, vacuum transmitting pipe and brackets.
  8.  
  9. Install the accelerator link.
  10.  
  11. Install the PCV orifice pipe and hoses.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner hose along with air connector pipe.
  14.  
  15. Install the cylinder head covers (using new gaskets) and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 22 inch lbs.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug cables.
  18.  
  19. Install the air intake connector, vacuum transmitting pipe and brackets.
  20.  
  21. Install the accelerator link.
  22.  
  23. Install the PCV orifice pipe and hoses.
  24.  
  25. Install the air cleaner hose along with air connector pipe.
  26.  
  27. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  28.  

3Y-EC and 4Y-EC Engines

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front seat.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine service hole cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner hose and air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and tag all cables and wires attached to various engine parts in order to gain access to the rocker arm cover and its retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cap nuts and seal washers that retain the rocker arm cover to the cylinder head and remove the rocker arm cover along with the old gasket.
  12.  
  13. Uniformly loosen and remove the 3 bolts and 2 nuts in several passes. Then remove the rocker arm assembly from the cylinder head.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the pushrods are installed in the correct position.
  2.  
  3. Hold the pushrods in place and install the rocker arm shaft assembly.
  4.  
  5. Uniformly tighten the 3 bolts and 2 nuts in several passes until a final torque of 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) is obtained.
  6.  
  7. Using a new gasket, install the rocker arm cover. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. To complete this procedure, installation is the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.
