  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Draw the brake fluid out of the clutch master cylinder with a syringe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel lower finish panel and air duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the clevis pin and clip.
  8.  
  9. Detach the hydraulic line from the tube.
  10.  


WARNING
Do not spill brake fluid on the painted surfaces of the vehicle.

  1. Remove the bolts which secure the master cylinder to the firewall. Pull out the master cylinder assembly from the firewall.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Bleed the system as outlined in this section. Adjust the clutch pedal height and free-play as previously outlined in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Draw the brake fluid out of the clutch master cylinder with a syringe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clutch master cylinder reservoir cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel retaining screws and pull the panel toward you.
  8.  
  9. Remove the combination meter retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speedometer cable and wiring, then remove the combination meter.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 3 air duct assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clevis pin and clip.
  16.  
  17. Detach the hydraulic lines from the master cylinder and the one going back to the slave cylinder. Do not spill brake fluid on the painted surfaces of the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the master cylinder retaining bolts. Pull the master cylinder out of the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the master cylinder assembly and retaining bolts.
  2.  
  3. Attach the hydraulic lines to the master cylinder and slave cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Install the clevis pin and clip.
  6.  
  7. Install the 3 air duct assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Attach the speedometer cable and wiring to the back of the combination meter.
  10.  
  11. Install the combination meter and retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument cluster finish panel and retaining screws.
  14.  
  15. Refill the master cylinder reservoir and install the cap.
  16.  
  17. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Bleed the system as outlined in this section. Adjust the clutch pedal height and free-play as previously outlined in this section.
  20.  

OVERHAUL



  1. Clamp the master cylinder body in a vise with soft jaws.
  2.  
  3. Separate the reservoir assembly from the master cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Remove the snapring and remove the pushrod/piston assembly.
  6.  
  7. Inspect all of the parts and replace any which are worn or defective.
  8.  

Honing of the cylinder may be necessary to smooth pitting.

Assembly is performed in the following order:

  1. Coat all parts with clean brake fluid, prior to assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the piston assembly in the cylinder bore.
  4.  
  5. Fit the pushrod over the washer and secure them with the snapring.
  6.  
  7. Install the reservoir.
  8.
