    Tie Rod Ends
    1983-84 CRESSIDA

    1. Scribe alignment marks on the tie rod and rack end.
    2.  
    3. Working at the steering knuckle arm, pull out the cotter pin and then remove the castellated nut.
    4.  
    5. Using a tie rod end puller, disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle arm.
    6.  
    7. Repeat the first 2 steps on the other end of the tie rod (where it attaches to the relay rod or steering rack).
    8.  

    To install:

    1. Align the alignment marks on the tie rod and rack end.
    2.  
    3. Install the tie rod end.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the tie rod end nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    6.  

    1985-90 CRESSIDA
    1. Loosen the locknut on the tie rod end.
    2.  
    3. Place matchmarks on the locknut and tie rod ends and rack ends.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cotter pin and set nut.
    6.  
    7. Using a tie rod puller, disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Unscrew the tie rod end from the rack end.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Screw the locknut and tie rod end onto the rack ends until the matchmarks are aligned.
    2.  
    3. Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle end.
    4.  
    5. After adjusting the toe-in, tighten the locknuts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).

    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using a tie rod end puller, disconnect the tie rod from the relay rod.
    6.  
    7. Using a tie rod end puller remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the tie rod end from the vehicle.
    10.  
    11. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the clamp nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the knuckle-to-arm nuts to 67 ft. lbs.
    12.  

    1986-89 VAN
    1. Loosen the locknut on the tie rod end.
    2.  
    3. Place matchmarks on the locknut and tie rod ends and rack ends.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cotter pin and set nut.
    6.  
    7. Using a tie rod puller, disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Unscrew the tie rod end from the rack end.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Screw the locknut and tie rod end onto the rack ends until the matchmarks are aligned.
    2.  
    3. Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle end.
    4.  
    5. After adjusting the toe-in, tighten the locknuts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).

    Pitman Arm
    1984-85 VAN
    1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the pitman arm nut. Disconnect the pitman arm from the sector shaft.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm. Inspect the arm for damage and cracks.
    6.  

    To install:

    1. Align the marks on the pitman arm and the sector shaft and install the nut. Tighten the drag link nut to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the pitman arm nut 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
    4.  

    Relay Rod
    1983-84 CRESSIDA
    1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckle arm.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the relay rod from the pitman arm and the idler arm.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect tie rods from the relay rod.
    6.  
    7. Inspect the arms for damage and cracks.
    8.  

    To install:

    1. Turn the tie rods in the adjusting tube until the measurements are equal. The tie rods should be approximately 320mm (12.60 in.).
    2.  
    3. Turn the tie rods so they cross at approximately 90°.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the adjusting tube clamps to lock the tie rods into position. Torque them to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Connect the tie rods to the relay rods to the relay rod and tighten the 2 nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Connect the relay rod to the pitman arm and idler arm. Tighten the 2 nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) and install the cotter pin.
    10.  
    11. Connect the tie rod ends to the knuckle arm and tighten the 2 nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
    12.  
    13. Check the front wheel alignment.
    14.  

    1984-85 VAN
    1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the relay rod.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the relay rod from the center arm and the idler arm.
    6.  
    7. Inspect the arm for damage and cracks.
    8.  

    To install:

    1. Connect the relay rod to the center arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the relay rod to the idler arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the relay rod to the tie rods. Tighten the mounting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    6.  

    Knuckle Arm
    1984-85 VAN
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front axle hub assembly as previously outlined in this guide.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle arm.
    4.  
    5. Remove the knuckle arm.
    6.  
    7. Inspect the knuckle arm for damage and cracks.
    8.  

    To install:

    1. Install the knuckle arm to the steering knuckle and torque bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the tie rod to the knuckle arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the front axle hub assembly.
    6.  

    Center Arm Bracket
    1984-85 VAN
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the relay rod from the center arm.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the drag link from the center arm.
    6.  
    7. Remove the nut from the center arm shaft. Using a suitable puller, remove the center arm from the center arm shaft.
    8.  
    9. Remove the center arm bracket retaining bolts and nuts.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Install the center arm bracket nuts and bolts. Tighten them to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the center arm to the drag link. Tighten the mounting nut to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the center arm to the relay rod. Tighten the mounting nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    6.  

    Idler Arm Bracket
    1983-84 CRESSIDA
    1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckle arm.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the idler arm from the relay rod.
    6.  
    7. Remove the idler arm retaining nuts and remove the idler arm from the body.
    8.  

    To install:

    1. Install the idler arm and the retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the idler arm to the relay rod. Tighten the nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
    4.  
    5. Connect the tie rod ends to the knuckle arm and tighten the 2 nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
    6.  
    7. Check the front wheel alignment.
    8.  

    1984-85 VAN
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the relay rod from the idler arm.
    4.  
    5. Remove the idler arm bracket nuts and bolts and remove the idler arm.
    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install the idler arm along with the bracket nuts and bolts. Tighten them to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the idler arm to the relay rod. Tighten the mounting nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
