REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the 4WD hubs.
- Using a small prybar, pry the grease seal from the rear of the disc/hub assembly, then remove the inner bearing from the assembly.
- Using a shop cloth, wipe the grease from inside the disc/hub assembly.
- Using a brass drift, drive outer bearing races from each side of the disc/hub assembly.
- Using solvent, clean all of the parts and blow dry with compressed air.
- Using a bearing installation tool, drive the outer races into the disc/hub assembly until they seat against the shoulder.
- Using multi-purpose grease, coat the area between the races and pack the bearings.
- Place the inner bearing into the rear of the disc/hub assembly. Using a bearing installation tool, drive a new grease seal into the rear of the disc/hub assembly until it is flush with the housing.
- Install the disc/hub assembly onto the axle shaft, the outer bearing, the thrust washer and the adjusting nut.
- To adjust the bearing preload, perform the following:
- Tighten the adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs.
- Turn the disc/hub assembly 2-3 times, from the left to the right.
- Loosen the adjusting nut until it can be turned by hand.
- Retighten the adjusting nut to 18 ft. lbs.
- Install the lock washer and the locknut. Tighten the locknut to 33 ft. lbs.
- Check that the bearing has no play.
- Using a spring gauge, connect it to a wheel stud, the gauge should be held horizontal, then measure the rotating force, it should be 6-12 lbs.
- Lower the vehicle.
