REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Van
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the 4WD hubs.
  2.  
  3. Using a small prybar, pry the grease seal from the rear of the disc/hub assembly, then remove the inner bearing from the assembly.
  4.  
  5. Using a shop cloth, wipe the grease from inside the disc/hub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using a brass drift, drive outer bearing races from each side of the disc/hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Using solvent, clean all of the parts and blow dry with compressed air.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Using a bearing installation tool, drive the outer races into the disc/hub assembly until they seat against the shoulder.
  2.  
  3. Using multi-purpose grease, coat the area between the races and pack the bearings.
  4.  
  5. Place the inner bearing into the rear of the disc/hub assembly. Using a bearing installation tool, drive a new grease seal into the rear of the disc/hub assembly until it is flush with the housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the disc/hub assembly onto the axle shaft, the outer bearing, the thrust washer and the adjusting nut.
  8.  
  9. To adjust the bearing preload, perform the following:
  10.  
    1. Tighten the adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs.
    2.  
    3. Turn the disc/hub assembly 2-3 times, from the left to the right.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the adjusting nut until it can be turned by hand.
    6.  
    7. Retighten the adjusting nut to 18 ft. lbs.
    8.  
    9. Install the lock washer and the locknut. Tighten the locknut to 33 ft. lbs.
    10.  
    11. Check that the bearing has no play.
    12.  
    13. Using a spring gauge, connect it to a wheel stud, the gauge should be held horizontal, then measure the rotating force, it should be 6-12 lbs.
    14.  

  11. Lower the vehicle.
