  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine under cover assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the lower control arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove both stabilizer bar brackets from the strut bar brackets.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut bar retaining nuts and disconnect the strut bar from the lower arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut bar bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. On the 1983-84 models, pull out the stabilizer bar through the strut bar bracket hole.
  16.  
  17. On the 1985-88 models, raise the tip of the stabilizer bar and pull out the strut bar. Remove the rear retainer and shim from the strut bar if so equipped.
  18.  
  19. On the 1985-88 models, remove the strut bar bracket retaining bolts and remove the strut bar bracket along with the stabilizer bar.
  20.  

To install:

  1. On the 1985-88 models, install the strut bar bracket with the stabilizer bar. Install the retaining bolts and tighten them to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  2.  
  3. On the 1985-88 models, install rear retainer and shim to the strut bar if so equipped. Install the strut bar to the bracket.
  4.  
  5. On the 1983-84 models, install the stabilizer bar through the strut bar bracket hole.
  6.  
  7. Install the strut bar bracket bolts and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the strut bar to the lower control arm. Install the retaining nuts and torque them to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install both stabilizer bar brackets to the strut bar brackets.
  12.  
  13. Install the stabilizer bar to the lower control arms. Tighten them to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front retainer and nut to the strut bar. Tighten the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm) 1983-84 models and 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm) on the 1985-88 models.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine under cover assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle safely.
  20.  
  21. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the wheel alignment.
  22.  

1989-90 MODELS

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine under cover assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar links from the stabilizer bar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right and left stabilizer bushings.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the right and left strut bars from the lower suspension arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right and left strut bar brackets with the stabilizer bar and remove the stabilizer bar.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer bar through the left and right strut bar brackets. Connect the strut bars to the lower suspension arms. Tighten the nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the strut bar brackets 86 ft. lbs. (117 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bushings and tighten the retaining nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer bar links, be careful not to reverse their positions. The right and left stabilizer bar links can be distinguished by their colors. The left-hand side will be olive green and right-hand side will be a bronze color.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine undercover.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle safely.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the wheel alignment.
  14.  

Van
STABILIZER BAR

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar from the lower suspension arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar brackets.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2.  
  3. Make sure that all torque specifications are done with the full weight of the vehicle on the ground.
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar brackets and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer bar to the lower suspension arm and tighten the nuts leaving a distance of 0.51-0.63 in. (13-16 mm).
  8.  
  9. Test drive the vehicle and check the front end alignment.
  10.

  1. Remove the stabilizer bar as noted earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar bracket from the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks on the strut bar.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear nut from the strut bar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts retaining the strut bar from the lower control arm, then remove the strut bar.
  10.  

To install:

  1. If reusing the old arm, install the front nut and align the matchmarks on the strut bar.
  2.  
  3. If using a new strut bar, install the front nut the standard distance 13.07 in. (332mm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut bar to the bracket by installing the washer and bushing to the bar. Attach the strut bar to the bracket. Install the collar, bushing and washer to the strut bar. Finger-tighten the rear nut.
  6.  
  7. Connect the strut bar to the lower control arm and tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the stands placed into position when removing the stabilizer bar and bounce the vehicle up and down to stabilize the suspension. Tighten the rear nut to 89 ft. lbs. (121 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar bracket and stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Check the front end alignment.
