Multi-Function Switch

Removal & Installation



  1. Make sure the steering wheel is centered and the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF , then disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. Remove the no. 2 lower steering wheel cover.
    WARNING
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON, DTCs will be recorded.

    1. Using a Torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx
    2.  
    3. screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    5. Pull out the wheel pad/airbag module from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the terminal and horn connector.
      WARNING
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Never disassemble the wheel pad. When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  7. Remove the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the installed position of the steering wheel and main shaft.
    4.  
    5. Using a suitable Steering wheel puller, Special Service Tools (SST) SST 09950- 50013 (09951- 05010, 09952- 05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), or equivalents remove the steering wheel from the shaft.

  9. Remove the 3 screws, then remove the lower steering column cover.

  11. Remove the upper steering column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Slide the column upper cover.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the airbag connector and connector from the spiral cable.
    4.  
    5. Release the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.

  15. Inspect the spiral cable. If the connector is scratched or cracked, or there are cracks, dents or damage to the spiral cable, it must be replaced with a new one.

  17. Remove the turn signal/headlamp (combination) switch, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Using a suitable prytool, or screwdriver (wrap the end with tape to prevent damage), release the claw and pull out the head lamp dimmer switch.
      WARNING
      Pressing the claw hard breaks the claw.

  19. Remove the multi-function (windshield wiper) switch, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connecter.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver (wrap the end with tape to prevent damage), press the claw shown in the illustration to disengage it is meshing and remove the windshield wiper switch assy.
      WARNING
      Pressing the claw hard breaks the claw.

To install:

  1. Install the multi-function (windshield wiper) switch in the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the turn signal/headlamp (combination) switch in the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Install spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Set the turn signal switch in neutral position.
      NOTE
      Be sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position before proceeding, as the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

    3. Engage the 3 claws and install the spiral cable.
      NOTE
      When replacing the spiral cable with new one, remove the lock pin before installing the handle.

    4.  
    5. Connect the airbag connector and connector.
    6.

  7. Install the lower steering column cover with the 3 screws.
  8.  
  9. Center the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF and the negative battery cable is disconnected.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn. The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.
    4.  
    5. Then, rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.

  11. Install the upper steering column covers.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Position the steering wheel on the mainshaft, making sure to align the matchmarks made during removal.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel set nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    4.

  15. Attach the connector.
    WARNING
    Never use airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones. Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque. If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one. When installing the wheel pad, take care so that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Install the horn button, as follows:
    2.  
    3. Connect the terminal.
    4.  
    5. Connect the airbag connector.
    6.  
    7. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
    8.  
    9. Using a Torx® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).

  17. Install the No. 2 lower steering wheel cover, as follows:

  19. Connect the negative battery cable and then verify that the SRS is operating properly.
  20.  

Highlander Hybrid
  1. Place the vehicle-s front wheels facing straight ahead.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from negative battery terminal and wait AT LEAST 90 seconds before proceeding.
  4.  
  5. Use a suitable prytool to carefully remove the lower steering wheel cover no.3.

  9. Remove the steering pad, as follows:
    1. Using a T30 Torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    2.  
    3. Pull out the steering pad from the steering wheel assembly and support the steering pad with one Hand.
      WARNING
      When removing the steering pad, do not pull the airbag wire harness.

    4.  
    5. Disconnect the horn connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the 2 connectors from the steering pad.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    8.  
    9. Remove the steering pad.
    10.

  11. Remove steering wheel assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the installed position of the steering wheel on the wheel and main shaft assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using Special Tools 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), or their equivalents, remove the steering wheel assembly.

  13. Remove the lower steering column cover:
    1. Remove the 3 screws.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the lower steering column cover.

  15. Remove the upper steering column cover:
    1. Disengage the claw and remove the upper steering column cover.

  17. Remove the multi-function/wiper switch, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the claw and remove the wiper switch.
      WARNING
      If the claw is pushed with excessive force, it may be broken.

To install:

  1. Install the multi-function/wiper switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper steering column cover, as follows:
    1. Engage the claw to install the upper steering column cover.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Install the lower steering column cover.
    1. Engage the 2 claws to install the lower steering column cover.
    2.  
    3. Install the 3 screws and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2.0 Nm).
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster finish panel
  8.  
  9. Install the lower instrument panel finish panel
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    4.

  13. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering pad, as follows:
    1. Support the steering pad with one hand.
    2.  
    3. Connect the 2 connectors to the steering pad.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    4.  
    5. Connect the horn connector.
    6.  
    7. Confirm that the circumference groove of the Torx® screw fits in the screw case, and place the steering pad onto the steering wheel assembly.
    8.  
    9. Using a T30 Torx® socket wrench, tighten the 2 screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    10.

  17. Install the lower steering wheel cover no.3.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower steering wheel cover no.2.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Inspect the SRS warning light. When you turn the ignition switch ON , it should go on for about 6 seconds, then turn off.
  24.  
  25. Perform the initialization procedure, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
