Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If equipped, be careful not to damage the oil seal, driveshaft boot and/or speed sensor rotor when removing the steering knuckle.



    Wheel
     



    Shock absorber (strut assembly)
     

  4.  
  5. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor.
    CAUTION
    The proper tools must be used for this procedure. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury if not properly removed and installed.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center retaining nut, by holding the spring seat
     
    Support, dust seal, spring seat, insulator and spring from the strut assembly

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring bumper and lower insulator to the strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring and fit the lower end of the spring into the spring seat gap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Strut
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

Hybrid Conventional Strut Overhaul
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If equipped, be careful not to damage the oil seal, driveshaft boot and/or speed sensor rotor when removing the steering knuckle.

  4.  
  5. Install a nut/bolt to the bracket at the lower portion of the strut assembly and secure it in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Support, dust seal, spring seat, insulator and spring from the strut assembly

To install:

  1. Install the spring bumper and lower insulator to the strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring and fit the lower end of the spring into the spring seat gap.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Upper insulator, spring seat, dust seal, support and spring seat. Tighten the new retaining nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  6.  
  7. If required, bleed the brake system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    NOTE
    Do not support the weight of the vehicle on the suspension arm; the arm will deform under its weight.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake hose and the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor wire from the strut
     
    Sway bar link from the strut
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen, but do not remove the 2 lower bolts.
  6.  
  7. Support the axle carrier with a jack and remove cap.
  8.  
  9. If the strut is being disassembled, loosen the center nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 3 mounting nuts.
  12.  
  13. Lower the carrier and remove the 2 lower nuts and bolts.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    3 mounting nuts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    2 lower nuts: 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm)
     
    Center nut: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)

  16.  

  1. Remove the tonneau cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left side deck trim cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer link from the strut.
  8.  
  9. On 2-wheel drive models, disconnect the skid control sensor wire and brake hose from the strut and carrier.
  10.  
  11. On 4-wheel drive models, disconnect the brake hose and speed sensor from the strut and carrier.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the 2 nuts at the lower end of the strut, but don-t remove them.
  14.  
  15. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 3 upper strut nuts and lower the axle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts. Lift out the strut.

To install:

  1. Position the strut and install the 3 upper nuts. Torque to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lift the axle and install the 2 lower bolts and nuts. Torque to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Wire-to-strut clamp: 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Sensor clamp: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     

  6.  

Hybrid
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear interior trim for RX 400h as follows:
    1. Remove the front and rear deck floor box.
    2.  
    3. Remove the No. 2 and No. 3 deck board assemblies.
    4.  
    5. Remove rear floor finishing plate.
    6.  
    7. Remove jack assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove left and right deck side trim box.
    10.  
    11. Remove rear door scuff plate.
    12.  
    13. Remove deck side trim cover.
    14.  
    15. Remove rear floor finishing side plate.
    16.  
    17. Remove deck trim side panel.
    18.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the rear interior trim as follows:
    1. Remove the left side deck trim cover.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer link from the strut.
  10.  
  11. On 2-wheel drive models, disconnect the skid control sensor wire and brake hose from the strut and carrier.
  12.  
  13. On 4-wheel drive models, disconnect the brake hose and speed sensor from the strut and carrier.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the 2 nuts at the lower end of the strut, but don-t remove them.
  16.  
  17. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 3 upper strut nuts and lower the axle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts. Lift out the strut.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Position the strut and install the 3 upper nuts. Torque to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lift the axle and install the 2 lower bolts and nuts. Torque to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the strut locknut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Wire-to-strut clamp: 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Sensor clamp: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
