Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Flexible brake hose from the rear strut assembly
     
    Brake caliper and support it on using wire
     
    Brake rotor
     

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor connector
     
    4 rear axle hub assembly nuts
     
    Hub assembly
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New hub assembly. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper. Tighten the mounting bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Flexible brake hose to the rear strut assembly. Tighten the mounting bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Wheels

  3. Test drive the vehicle.
  4.  

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper and support assembly and suspend it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Check the bearing backlash. It should not exceed 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If it does, it must be replaced.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the hub/bearing assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Hub/bearing assembly bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Caliper support: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)
     
    Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Hub nut: 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm)

4-Wheel Drive

The 4WD rear wheel bearings are serviced as a unit with the hub and are not replaceable. See the Halfshaft Removal and Installation procedure.

Hybrid
  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper and support assembly and suspend it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Check the bearing backlash. It should not exceed 0.0020 in. (0.05mm). If it does, it must be replaced.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the hub/bearing assembly.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Hub/bearing assembly bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Caliper support: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)
     
    Brake hose clamp: 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm)
     
    Hub nut: 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm)
