Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

Print

NOTE
Measure valve clearance with the engine cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Ignition coils

    Valve covers

  6.
  7. Set the engine to the top of the compression stroke with the valves closed for the cylinder to be measured.
  8.
  9. Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:

    Intake: 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm)

    Exhaust: 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm)

  10.
  11. Record the measurements for each valve.
  12.
  13. When all valve clearances have been measured, remove the camshafts.
  14.
  15. Remove the valve shims and measure them. Note this measurement along with the clearance measurement recorded earlier.
  16.
  17. Using the valve clearance and shim thickness measurements, find replacement shims in the Adjusting Shim Selection charts.
  18.
  19. Install or connect the following:

    Replacement valve shims

    Camshafts

    Valve covers

    Ignition coils

    Negative battery cable

  20.
  21. Fill the cooling system.
  22.
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.
