Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushings with a hydraulic press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Press the bushings into the control arm until the bushing flange contacts the housing edge of the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushings, as follows:

    Pry up the bushing flange, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Press the bushing(s) from the upper control arm, using a shop press and tools 09613-26010, 09632-36010 and 09950-00020
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Press the No. 1 bushing into the control arm until the bushing flange contacts the housing edge of the control arm, using a shop press, a steel plate and tools 09631-12090 and 09502-12010, facing the correct direction.
  4.  
  5. Press the No. 2 bushing into the control arm until the bushing flange contacts the housing edge of the control arm, using a shop press, a steel plate and tools 09631-12090 and 09950-60020, facing the correct direction.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower control arm to the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the bolts to 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 117 ft. lbs. (159 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tie-rod end, as follows:

    Cotter pin and nut
     
    Tie-rod end from the lower ball joint, using tool 09610-20012
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering gear set bolts and nuts
     
    Stabilizer bar link from the lower control arm
     
    Strut from the lower control arm
     

  8.  
  9. Disconnect the lower ball joint, as follows:

    Cotter pin and nut
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower control arm
     

  10.  
  11. Matchmark both front and rear cam plates and chassis frame.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower control arm while slightly shifting the power steering gear rearward.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm while slightly shifting the power steering gear rearward
     
    Align both front and rear cam plates and chassis frame matchmarks. Torque both bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Connect the lower ball joint, as follows:

    Lower ball joint to the lower control arm. Torque the nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Strut to the lower control arm. Torque the nut/bolt to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link to the lower control arm. Torque the nut to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
     
    Power steering gear set bolts and nuts. Torque the set bolt and clamp nut/bolt to 122 ft. lbs. and the set nut/bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm)
     
    Tie-rod end to the lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Front wheel.
     

  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.

    Stabilizer bar link

    Lower ball joint
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the bolts to 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 117 ft. lbs. (159 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
