Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Discharge and recover the A/C system refrigerant using approved equipment.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Heater hoses from the core
     
    Evaporator inlet and outlet tubes from the evaporator and cap the lines to avoid system contamination
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel as follows:
    1. Disable the air bag system.
    2.  
    3. Using a taped flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the retaining clips attaching the center trim plate to the instrument panel.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the A/C switch, hazard switch; rear defogger switch and passenger seat belt indicator switch electrical connections.
    6.  
    7. Remove the radio retaining screws, clamp from the radio bracket, slide the radio forward to disconnect the power and antenna connections. Remove the radio.
    8.  
    9. Remove the A/C switch and screw.
    10.  
    11. Remove the hazard switch.
    12.  
    13. Remove the rear defogger switch.
    14.  
    15. Remove the manual transmission shift knob.
    16.  
    17. Using a taped flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the retaining clips attaching the front floor console trim plate to the floor console assembly.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the 2 cigar lighter connectors.
    20.  
    21. Disconnect the accessory power receptacle connectors.
    22.  
    23. Remove the cigar lighters and power receptacle.
    24.  
    25. Place both wheels in the straight ahead position.
    26.  
    27. Remove the bolts from the steering wheel module.
    28.  
    29. Release the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the inflator module.

    31. Disconnect the steering wheel module connectors.
    32.  
    33. Remove the steering wheel module.
    34.  
    35. Matchmark the steering wheel nut-to-shaft position, then remove the steering wheel nut and the wheel.
    36.  
    37. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover screws and the covers.
    38.  
    39. Disconnect the turn signal/headlamp assembly connectors.
    40.  
    41. Remove the turn signal/headlamp switch assembly
    42.  
    43. Remove the wiper switch by depressing the tab.
    44.  
    45. Remove the glove box.
    46.  
    47. Disconnect the instrument panel connector.
    48.  
    49. Remove the instrument panel module connectors and the passenger air bag assembly.

    51. Remove the cluster trim plate by disengaging the clips.

    53. Remove the cluster screw and disengage the 2 lower clips.
    54.  
    55. Disconnect the cluster electrical connectors and remove the cluster.
    56.  
    57. Remove the windshield garnish moldings.
    58.  
    59. Using a taped flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the retaining clips attaching the instrument panel left trim plate to the instrument panel.
    60.  
    61. Disconnect the power mirror and dimmer switch connectors.
    62.  
    63. Remove the power mirror and dimmer switches.
    64.  
    65. Disconnect any remaining electrical connections.
    66.  
    67. Remove the upper instrument panel screws and the panel by pulling towards the rear to disengage the tabs.
    68.  
    69. Disconnect the steering wheel coil connector.
    70.  
    71. Release the 3 claws and remove the coil assembly.
    72.  
    73. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, insert the key into the cylinder, turn to the ACC position, push in the release button, disconnect the park lock cable, remove the key from the cylinder and lock the steering wheel.
    74.  
    75. Move the silencer pad from the column.
    76.  
    77. Matchmark the steering shaft coupling to the shaft.
    78.  
    79. Loosen the upper bolt on the coupling.
    80.  
    81. Remove the lower bolt from the coupling.
    82.  
    83. Move the coupling onto the column shaft.
    84.  
    85. Disconnect the wiring harness clamps from the column.
    86.  
    87. Remove the 3 bolts and the column.
    88.  
    89. Remove the body hinge trim panels.
    90.  
    91. Remove the sill plates.
    92.  
    93. Remove the front floor console storage door.
    94.  
    95. Remove the screws attaching the console to the instrument panel, pull the console rewards and up and remove the front floor console.
    96.  
    97. Remove the HVAC retaining screw; disconnect the electrical connectors and module control, temperature control and A/C cables. Remove the unit.
    98.  
    99. Push in the clip and disconnect the cable from the manual selector shifter assembly.
    100.  
    101. Using a suitable prytool, disconnect the park lock cable from the bracket.

    103. Disconnect the shift select cable from the manual selector lever.

    105. Using a suitable prytool, disconnect the shift select cable from the shift lever plate.

    107. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the wire harness clip.
    108.  
    109. Remove the nuts from the selector and remove the selector.
    110.  
    111. Disconnect the hood release cable from the release handle.
    112.  
    113. Remove the 8 bolts, 4 push retainers and the wire harness clamps from the lower instrument panel and remove the panel.
    114.  
    115. Disengage the wiring harness clips, remove the bolts retaining the lower instrument panel pad and the pad.
    116.  
    117. Remove the ground cable.
    118.  
    119. Remove the connector housing bracket from the right instrument panel center support brace.
    120.  
    121. Remove the left brace nut, right brace nut, left brace bolt, right brace bolt, left center support brace and right center support brace.
    122.  
    123. Remove the windshield defroster nozzle duct from the heater case.
    124.  
    125. Remove the 5 bolts and the nuts from the instrument panel reinforcement at the hinge pillars.
    126.  
    127. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.

    129. Disconnect the blower motor connector.

    131. Disconnect the rear ducts from the HVAC module.

    133. Remove the HVAC module.

    135. Remove the 12 bolts from the core case.

    137. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core.
  2.  
  3. Install the 12 bolts from the core case and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the HVAC module.
  6.  
  7. Connect the rear ducts to the HVAC module.
  8.  
  9. Connect the blower motor connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel reinforcement.
  12.  
  13. Install the 5 bolts and the nuts to the instrument panel reinforcement at the hinge pillars. Tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the windshield defroster nozzle duct to the heater case.
  16.  
  17. Install left center support brace and right center support brace. Tighten the nuts and bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the connector housing bracket.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ground cable.
  22.  
  23. Install the lower instrument panel pad and the bolts and attach the wiring harness clips.
  24.  
  25. Connect the hood release cable to the release handle.
  26.  
  27. Install the lever and tighten the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Connect the manual selector electrical connections.
  30.  
  31. Attach the shift cable to the shift lever plate.
  32.  
  33. Connect the shift select cable to the selector lever.
  34.  
  35. Install the park lock cable to the shift lever plate.
  36.  
  37. Connect the park lock cable to the manual selector lever.
  38.  
  39. Connect the electrical connectors and module control, temperature control and A/C cables. Install the HVAC unit.
  40.  
  41. Adjust the temperature control cable by setting the temperature control dial to coldest. Hold the door lever fully rearwards, clockwise. Attach the cable to the control clip.

  43. Adjust the Mode linkage by setting the dial to defrost. Hold the door lever fully rearwards, clockwise. Attach the cable to the control clip.

  45. Install the front floor console and tighten the screws.
  46.  
  47. Install the front floor console storage door.
  48.  
  49. Install the sill plates.
  50.  
  51. Install the column.
  52.  
  53. Install the 3 bolts and tighten the lower bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm) and the 2 upper bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  54.  
  55. Align the matchmarks made prior to removal.
  56.  
  57. Lower the coupling onto the shaft. Install the bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  58.  
  59. Connect the wiring harness clamps to the column.
  60.  
  61. Move the silencer pad to the column.
  62.  
  63. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, insert the key into the cylinder, turn to the ACC position, insert the park lock cable making sure the release button engages. Make sure the key will not rotate to the lock position unless the shifter is in the park position, remove the key from the cylinder and lock the steering wheel.
  64.  
  65. Install the body hinge trim panels.
  66.  
  67. Make sure the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.
  68.  
  69. If installing a new coil, remove the lock pin.
  70.  
  71. Install the coil making sure the 3 claws engage.
  72.  
  73. While holding the coil casing, turn the coil center casing counterclockwise until the coil reaches its stop.
  74.  
  75. Turn the coil center casing clockwise 212
  76.  
  77. Align the center casing with the arrow on the outer casing.
  78.  
  79. Connect the coil electrical connector.
  80.  
  81. Install the upper instrument panel and screws.
  82.  
  83. Connect the electrical connections.
  84.  
  85. Install the power mirror and dimmer switches.
  86.  
  87. Connect the power mirror and dimmer switch connectors.
  88.  
  89. Install the instrument panel left trim plate to the instrument panel.
  90.  
  91. Install the windshield garnish moldings.
  92.  
  93. Connect the cluster electrical connectors and install the cluster.
  94.  
  95. Engage the cluster lower clips and install the screw.
  96.  
  97. Install the cluster trim plate.
  98.  
  99. Install the passenger air bag assembly and the instrument panel module connectors.
  100.  
  101. Connect the instrument panel connector.
  102.  
  103. Install the glove box.
  104.  
  105. Install the wiper switch.
  106.  
  107. Install the turn signal/headlamp switch assembly
  108.  
  109. Connect the turn signal/headlamp assembly connectors.
  110.  
  111. Install the upper and lower steering column covers and screws.
  112.  
  113. Install the steering wheel and nut aligning the matchmarks made prior to removal and tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  114.  
  115. Connect the steering wheel module connectors.
  116.  
  117. Install the CPA to the inflator module.
  118.  
  119. Install the steering wheel module and tighten the retainers 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
  120.  
  121. Install cigar lighters and power receptacle.
  122.  
  123. Connect the accessory power receptacle connectors.
  124.  
  125. Connect the 2 cigar lighter connectors.
  126.  
  127. Install the front floor console trim plate to the floor console assembly.
  128.  
  129. Install the manual transmission shift knob.
  130.  
  131. Install the rear defogger switch.
  132.  
  133. Install the hazard switch.
  134.  
  135. Install the A/C switch and screw.
  136.  
  137. Install the radio.
  138.  
  139. Connect the A/C switch, hazard switch, rear defogger switch and passenger seat belt indicator switch electrical connections.
  140.  
  141. Install the center trim plate to the instrument panel.
  142.  
  143. Connect the evaporator inlet and outlet tubes.
  144.  
  145. Connect the heater hoses to the core.
  146.  
  147. Connect the negative battery cable.
  148.  
  149. Recharge the A/C system and fill the cooling system.
  150.

    24.  
    25. Place both wheels in the straight ahead position.
    26.  
    27. Remove the bolts from the steering wheel module.
    28.  
    29. Release the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the inflator module.

    53. Remove the cluster screw and disengage the 2 lower clips.

    55. Disconnect the cluster electrical connectors and remove the cluster.

    57. Remove the windshield garnish moldings.

    59. Using a taped flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the retaining clips attaching the instrument panel left trim plate to the instrument panel.

    61. Disconnect the power mirror and dimmer switch connectors.
    62.  
    63. Remove the power mirror and dimmer switches.
    64.  
    65. Disconnect any remaining electrical connections.
    66.  
    67. Remove the upper instrument panel screws and the panel by pulling towards the rear to disengage the tabs.
    68.  
    69. Disconnect the steering wheel coil connector.
    70.  
    71. Release the 3 claws and remove the coil assembly.
    72.  
    73. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, insert the key into the cylinder, turn to the ACC position, push in the release button, disconnect the park lock cable, remove the key from the cylinder and lock the steering wheel.

    75. Move the silencer pad from the column.

    77. Matchmark the steering shaft coupling to the shaft.

    91. Remove the sill plates.

    93. Remove the front floor console storage door.
    94.  
    95. Remove the screws attaching the console to the instrument panel, pull the console rewards and up and remove the front floor console.
    96.  
    97. Remove the HVAC retaining screw; disconnect the electrical connectors and module control, temperature control and A/C cables. Remove the unit.
    98.  
    99. Push in the clip and disconnect the cable from the manual selector shifter assembly.
    100.  
    101. Using a suitable prytool, disconnect the park lock cable from the bracket.

    103. Disconnect the shift select cable from the manual selector lever.

    105. Using a suitable prytool, disconnect the shift select cable from the shift lever plate.

    107. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the wire harness clip.
    108.  
    109. Remove the nuts from the selector and remove the selector.
    110.  
    111. Disconnect the hood release cable from the release handle.
    112.  
    113. Remove the 8 bolts, 4 push retainers and the wire harness clamps from the lower instrument panel and remove the panel.
    114.  
    115. Disengage the wiring harness clips, remove the bolts retaining the lower instrument panel pad and the pad.
    116.  
    117. Remove the ground cable.
    118.  
    119. Remove the connector housing bracket from the right instrument panel center support brace.
    120.  
    121. Remove the left brace nut, right brace nut, left brace bolt, right brace bolt, left center support brace and right center support brace.
    122.  
    123. Remove the windshield defroster nozzle duct from the heater case.
    124.  
    125. Remove the 5 bolts and the nuts from the instrument panel reinforcement at the hinge pillars.
    126.  
    127. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.

    129. Disconnect the blower motor connector.
    130.  
    131. Disconnect the rear ducts from the HVAC module.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core.
  2.  
  3. Install the 12 bolts from the core case and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the HVAC module.
  6.  
  7. Connect the rear ducts to the HVAC module.
  8.  
  9. Connect the blower motor connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel reinforcement.
  12.  
  13. Install the 5 bolts and the nuts to the instrument panel reinforcement at the hinge pillars. Tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the windshield defroster nozzle duct to the heater case.
  16.  
  17. Install left center support brace and right center support brace. Tighten the nuts and bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the connector housing bracket.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ground cable.
  22.  
  23. Install the lower instrument panel pad and the bolts and attach the wiring harness clips.
  24.  
  25. Connect the hood release cable to the release handle.
  26.  
  27. Install the lever and tighten the nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Connect the manual selector electrical connections.
  30.  
  31. Attach the shift cable to the shift lever plate.
  32.  
  33. Connect the shift select cable to the selector lever.
  34.  
  35. Install the park lock cable to the shift lever plate.
  36.  
  37. Connect the park lock cable to the manual selector lever.
  38.  
  39. Connect the electrical connectors and module control, temperature control and A/C cables. Install the HVAC unit.
  40.  
  41. Adjust the temperature control cable by setting the temperature control dial to coldest. Hold the door lever fully rearwards, clockwise. Attach the cable to the control clip.

  57. Lower the coupling onto the shaft. Install the bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  58.  
  59. Connect the wiring harness clamps to the column.
  60.  
  61. Move the silencer pad to the column.
  62.  
  63. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, insert the key into the cylinder, turn to the ACC position, and insert the park lock cable making sure the release button engages. Make sure the key will not rotate to the lock position unless the shifter is in the park position, remove the key from the cylinder and lock the steering wheel.

  65. Install the body hinge trim panels.

  75. Turn the coil center casing clockwise 2 1 / 2 turns.

  77. Align the center casing with the arrow on the outer casing.

  79. Connect the coil electrical connector.
  80.  
  81. Install the upper instrument panel and screws.
  82.  
  83. Connect the electrical connections.
  84.  
  85. Install the power mirror and dimmer switches.
  86.  
  87. Connect the power mirror and dimmer switch connectors.
  88.  
  89. Install the instrument panel left trim plate to the instrument panel.
  90.  
  91. Install the windshield garnish moldings.
  92.  
  93. Connect the cluster electrical connectors and install the cluster.
  94.  
  95. Engage the cluster lower clips and install the screw.
  96.  
  97. Install the cluster trim plate.
  98.  
  99. Install the passenger air bag assembly and the instrument panel module connectors.
  100.  
  101. Connect the instrument panel connector.
  102.  
  103. Install the glove box.
  104.  
  105. Install the wiper switch.
  106.  
  107. Install the turn signal/headlamp switch assembly
  108.  
  109. Connect the turn signal/headlamp assembly connectors.
  110.  
  111. Install the upper and lower steering column covers and screws.
  112.  
  113. Install the steering wheel and nut aligning the matchmarks made prior to removal and tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  114.  
  115. Connect the steering wheel module connectors.
  116.  
  117. Install the CPA to the inflator module.
  118.  
  119. Install the steering wheel module and tighten the retainers to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
  120.  
  121. Install cigar lighters and power receptacle.
  122.  
  123. Connect the accessory power receptacle connectors.
  124.  
  125. Connect the 2 cigar lighter connectors.
  126.  
  127. Install the front floor console trim plate to the floor console assembly.
  128.

  133. Install the hazard switch.

  135. Install the A/C switch and screw.

  137. Install the radio.

  139. Connect the A/C switch, hazard switch, rear defogger switch and passenger seat belt indicator switch electrical connections.

  141. Install the center trim plate to the instrument panel.

  143. Connect the evaporator inlet and outlet tubes.
  144.  
  145. Connect the heater hoses to the core.
  146.  
  147. Connect the negative battery cable.
  148.  
  149. Recharge the A/C system and fill the cooling system.
