Halfshaft Inner Joint & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Check that there is no play in the outboard joint shaft.
  2.  
  3. Check that the inboard joint shaft slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
  4.  
  5. Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direction of the inboard joint shaft.
  6.  
  7. Check for damage to boots.
  8.  
  9. Using a screwdriver, unclamp the boot clamps on one touch clamp type bands.
  10.  
  11. Using needle nose pliers, remove the boot left clamps on claw engagement type bands
  12.  
  13. Separate the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint assembly.
  14.  
  15. Place matchmarks on the inboard joint assembly and out-board joint shaft assembly.
    NOTE
    Do not punch the marks.

  17. Pull out the inboard joint assembly being careful not to drop the balls.
  18.  
  19. Place matchmarks on the outboard joint shaft assembly inner race and cage.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 6 balls, slide the cage toward outboard joint then using a snap ring pliers, remove the rear drive shaft snap ring.
  22.  
  23. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the inner race.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the inner race.

  25. Remove the cage, the inboard joint boot and inboard joint boot clamp and inboard joint boot No.2 clamp.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear drive shaft outboard joint.
  28.  
  29. Using a screwdriver, unclamp the boot clamps on one touch clamp type bands.
  30.  
  31. Using needle nose pliers, remove the boot left clamps on claw engagement type bands
  32.  
  33. Remove the outboard joint boot from the outboard joint shaft assembly.
  34.  
  35. Using a screwdriver, remove the shaft snap ring.
  36.  
  37. Using tool 09950-00020 and a press, remove the dust cover.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to drop the inboard joint.

To install:

  1. Install the rear drive shaft dust cover using tool 09527-2101 1, a steel plate and a press.
  2.  
  3. Install a new shaft snap ring to the inboard joint assembly.

  5. Install the outboard joint boot. Prior to installing the boot, wrap the splines of the drive shaft with vinyl tape to prevent the boot from being damaged.
  6.  
  7. Place a new outboard joint boot and 2 new clamps on the drive shaft.
  8.  
  9. Pack the outboard joint shaft and boot with 2.5 to 2.9 oz. of grease supplied with the kit.
  10.  
  11. Holding the outboard joint boot clamps near the closing claws, using needle nose pliers, position the holes in the clamp-s free end over the closing claws.
  12.  
  13. Secure the clamps by drawing the closing claws together.
  14.  
  15. Install new inboard joint boot with 2 new inboard joint clamps and cage as follows:
    1. Align the mathmarks, using a brass bar and a hammer and install the inner race.
    2.  
    3. Using a snap ring expander, install a new rear drive shaft snap ring.
    4.  
    5. Align the matchmarks and install the cage to the inner race.
    6.  
    7. Install the 6 balls with grease to the inner race.
    8.  
    9. Pack the inboard joint shaft and boot with 4.7 to 5.0 oz grease supplied with the kit.
    10.  
    11. Align the matchmarks and install the inboard joint assembly to the outboard joint shaft assembly.

  17. Install the inboard joint boot to the inboard joint assembly and outboard joint shaft assembly.

  19. Install rear drive shaft inboard joint boot clamps as follows:
    1. Holding the clamp near the closing claws, using needle nosed pliers, position the holes in the clamps free end over the closing claws. Secure clamp by drawing the closing claws together.

  21. The drive shaft is at standard length should be 27.098-27.492 in. (688.3-698.3mm) when assembled.
