Adjustment



  1. Adjust the rear brakes as follows:
    1. Temporarily install the drum and hub nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the hole plug from the backing plate.
    4.  
    5. Turn the adjuster to expand the shoe until the drum locks.
    6.  
    7. Back off the adjuster eight notches using a suitable adjustment tool.
    8.  
    9. Install the hole plug. into the backing plate to prevent dirt and moisture from entering.
    10.  
    11. Readjust the parking brake cable as necessary.
    12.  

  2.  
  3. Install the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Refill the master cylinder and pump pedal to attain full brake pedal before Road-testing the vehicle.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



AWD Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake drum. If the drum will not pull of the axle, back off the automatic adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.
     
    Return spring from the front brake shoe
     
    Anchor spring using needle nosed pliers
     
    Hold-down springs and pins from the front shoe
     
    Front shoe
     
    Automatic adjuster lever spring and the lever
     
    Hold-down springs and pins from the rear shoe
     
    Parking brake cable from the rear shoe using needle nosed pliers
     
    Rear brake shoe
     
    Anchor spring from the rear shoe
     
    C-washer using a suitable pry tool from the shoe
     
    Parking brake lever from the shoe
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate and the adjuster with lithium grease.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake lever, and attach using a new C-washer
     
    Parking brake cable to the lever
     
    Shoe assembly onto the backing plate
     
    Hold-down springs and pins to retain the rear shoe
     
    Automatic adjuster lever
     

  4.  
  5. Apply lithium grease to the adjuster bolt.

    Left hand parking brake shoe strut set
     
    Hold-down springs and pins to the front shoe
     
    Anchor spring to each shoe using needle nosed pliers
     
    Return spring to each shoe
     

  6.  
  7. Adjust the rear brakes as follows:
    1. Temporarily install the drum and hub nuts.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate and the adjuster with lithium grease.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake lever, and attach using a new C-washer
     
    Parking brake cable to the lever
     
    Shoe assembly onto the backing plate
     
    Hold-down springs and pins to retain the rear shoe
     
    Automatic adjuster lever

  5. Apply lithium grease to the adjuster bolt.

    Automatic adjuster lever from the front shoe
     
    Hold-down springs and pins from the rear shoe
     
    Upper side return spring from the rear shoe
     
    Parking brake cable from the rear shoe using needle nosed pliers
     
    Rear brake shoe
     
    C-washer using a suitable pry tool from the shoe
     
    Parking brake lever from the shoe
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate and the adjuster with lithium grease.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate and the adjuster with lithium grease.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake lever, and attach using a new C-washer
     
    Parking brake lever to the shoe lever
     
    Upper return spring to the rear shoe
     
    Shoe assembly onto the backing plate
     
    Hold-down springs and pins to retain the rear shoe
     
    Automatic adjuster lever
     

  4.  
  5. Apply lithium grease to the adjuster bolt.
