  4.
  5. The gap between the end of the piston rod and the engagement bolt should be 3mm.
  6.
  7. Turn the engagement bolt until the proper clearance is obtained.
  8.
  9. Install the pan and refill the transmission.
  10.

REAR BAND

A-30 Transmission

The rear band adjusting bolt is located on the outside of the transmission case so that it is not necessary to remove the pan in order to perform the adjustment.

  1. Loosen the adjust bolt locknut and turn the screw all the way in.
  2.
  3. Back off the adjusting screw one full turn.
  4.
  5. Lock the adjustment by tightening the adjusting screw locknut.
  6.

SHIFT LINKAGE

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

1970-79
  1. Check all of the shift linkage bushings for wear. Replace any that are excessively worn.
  2.
  3. Set the manual valve lever on the transmission in the Neutral position.
  4.
  5. Lock the connecting rod swivel with the locknut so that the pointer, selector, and manual valve lever are all in the Neutral position.
  6.
  7. Check the operation by moving the selector through all the gears.
  8.

1980-83
  1. Loosen the adjustment nut on the transmission connecting rod.
  2.
  3. Push the manual lever of the transmission fully forward.
  4.
  5. Move the manual lever back three notches, which is the N position.
  6.
  7. Set the gearshift selector lever in its N position.
  8.
  9. Apply a slight amount of forward pressure on the selector lever (towards the reverse position) and tighten the connecting rod adjustment nut.
  10.

1984-88
  1. Loosen the adjustment nut on the transmission shift linkage.
  2.
  3. Push the manual lever of the transmission fully rearward (forward on the Land Cruiser).
  4.
  5. Move the manual lever back two notches, which is the N position.
  6.
  7. Set the gearshift selector lever in its N position.
  8.
  9. Apply a slight amount of forward pressure on the selector lever (towards the R position) and tighten the shift linkage adjustment nut.

THROTTLE CABLE

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

1970-77

When the carburetor throttle is wide open, the throttle linkage pointer should line up with the mark stamped on the transmission case. To adjust:

  1. Loosen the locknuts on either end of the linkage adjusting turnbuckle located midway between the carburetor and the transmission.
  2.
  3. Detach the throttle linkage connecting rod from the carburetor.
  4.
  5. Align the pointer on the throttle valve lever with the mark stamped on the transmission case.
  6.
  7. Rotate the turnbuckle so that the end of the throttle linkage rod and the carburetor throttle lever are aligned.
  8.

The throttle valve of the carburetor must be fully open during this adjustment.

  1. Tighten the turnbuckle locknuts and connect the throttle rod to the carburetor.
  2.
  3. Open the throttle valve and check to see that the pointer and the mark are aligned on the transmission.
  4.
  5. Road test the truck. If the transmission keeps shifting rapidly back and forth between gears at certain speeds or if it fails to downshift properly when going up hills, repeat the throttle linkage adjustment.
  6.

1978-88
PICK-UP AND 4RUNNER
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. Push the accelerator to the floor and check that the throttle opens fully. If not, adjust the accelerator link so that it does.
  4.
  5. Push back the rubber boot from the throttle cable which runs down to the transmission. Loosen the throttle cable adjustment nuts so that the cable housing can be adjusted.
  6.
  7. Fully open the carburetor throttle by having an assistant press the accelerator all the way to the floor.
  8.
  9. Adjust the cable housing so that, with the throttle wide open, the distance between the end of the rubber boot and the cable stopper is 52mm for 1978; and 0-1mm for 1979-88.
  10.
  11. Tighten the nuts and double check the adjustment. Install the rubber boot and the air cleaner.
  12.

LAND CRUISER
  6.
  7. Adjust the cable housing so that, with the throttle fully closed, the distance between the end of the rubber boot and the cable stopper is 0.50-1.5mm.
  8.
  9. Tighten the nuts and double check the adjustment. Install the rubber boot and the air cleaner.
