REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2WD Pick-Ups-1970-82
GASOLINE ENGINES
  1. Drain the radiator, cooling system, transmission, and engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery-to-starter cable at the positive battery terminal.
  4.  
  5. Scribe marks on the hood and its hinges to aid in alignment during installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood supports from the body. Remove the hood.
  8.  

Do not remove the supports from the hood.

  1. Remove the headlight bezel and the radiator grille.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan shroud, the hood lock base and the base support.
  4.  
  5. Detach both the upper and lower hoses from the radiator. On models with automatic transmissions, disconnect the lines from the oil cooler. Remove the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the clamps and remove the heater and bypass hoses from the engine. Remove the heater control cable from the water valve.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wiring from the coolant temperature and oil pressure sending units.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner from its bracket, complete with its attendant hoses.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the accelerator torque rod from the carburetor. On models equipped with automatic transmissions, remove the transmission linkage as well.
  14.  
  15. Remove the emission control system hoses and wiring, as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Remove the clutch hydraulic line support bracket.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the high tension and primary wires from the coil.
  20.  
  21. Mark the spark plug cables and remove them from the distributor.
  22.  
  23. Detach the right hand front engine mount.
  24.  
  25. Remove the fuel line at the pump.
  26.  
  27. Detach the downpipe from the exhaust manifold.
  28.  
  29. Detach the left hand front engine mount.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect all the wiring harness multiconnectors.
  32.  

Perform the following steps on models with manual transmission.

  1. Remove the center console if so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shift lever boot(s).
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the four shift lever cap retaining screws. Remove the cap and withdraw the shift lever assembly.
  6.  

Perform the following steps on models equipped with automatic transmission:

  1. Remove the transmission selector linkage:
    1. On models equipped with a floor mounted selector, disconnect the control rod from the transmission.
    2.  
    3. On column mounted gear selection models, remove the shifter rod.
    4.

  3. Disconnect the neutral safety switch wiring connector.
  4.  
  5. Raise the rear of the vehicle with jacks and support it on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining screws and remove the parking brake equalizer support bracket. Disconnect the cable which runs between the lever and the equalizer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speedometer cable from the transmission. Disconnect the back-up wiring.
  10.  
  11. Detach the driveshaft from the rear of the transmission.
  12.  

If oil runs out of the transmission , an old U-joint yoke sleeve makes an excellent plug.

  1. Detach the clutch release cylinder assembly, complete with hydraulic lines. Do not disconnect the lines.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the rear support member mounting insulators.
  4.  
  5. Support the transmission and detach the rear support member retaining bolts. Withdraw the support member from the truck.
  6.  
  7. Install lifting hooks on the engine lifting brackets. Attach a suitable hoist to the engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove the jack from under the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Raise the engine and move it toward the front of the truck. Use care to avoid damaging the components which remain on the truck.
  12.  
  13. Follow the removal steps on installation of the engine. Adjust all of the linkages as detailed in the appropriate section. Install the hood and adjust it. Replenish the fluid levels in the engine, radiator and transmission.
  14.  

DIESEL ENGINE
  1. Make accurate marks on the body to indicate the relationship between the hood supports and the body. Unbolt the hood support at the body and remove the hood.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and remove both batteries from the vehicle.
  4.  

  1. Drain the cooling system and remove the radiator, shroud, and radiator hoses.
  2.  
  3. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor drive belt, unbolt the compressor and tie the compressor out of the way. Do not disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cooling fan, pulley, and drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the two heater hoses from the left side of the engine.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the vacuum reservoir hose from the rear of the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the idle-up unit, if the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the fuel pump return connection and the sediment inlet connection.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wiring from the following components:
    1. Alternator
    2.  
    3. Thermo-switch
    4.  
    5. Oil pressure switch
    6.  
    7. No. 1 glow plug relay (terminal +B)
    8.  
    9. StarterMark these wires and tie them out of the way.
    10.  

  16.  
  17. Disconnect the wiring from the left fender and the injection pump (accelerator wire). Also mark and tie these wires out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Using Toyota special service tool #09305-20012 or its equivalent, remove the transmission lever from inside the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  22.  
  23. Drain the engine oil.
  24.  
  25. Remove the engine under cover and remove the backup light switch wire.
  26.  
  27. Remove the engine shock absorber.
  28.  
  29. Remove the propeller (drive) shaft from the vehicle. Mark the propeller shaft and the companion flange so that the shaft may be reinstalled in its original position.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the exhaust pipe clamp from the transmission housing and the exhaust pipe mounting nuts from the exhaust manifold.
  34.  
  35. Unbolt the clutch release cylinder and lay the cylinder alongside the frame.
  36.  
  37. Remove the engine mounting bolts from each side of the engine.
  38.  
  39. Place a jack under the transmission so that it just touches the transmission.
  40.  
  41. Unbolt the transmission mounting bracket from the transmission and the crossmember. Remove the bracket.
  42.  
  43. Attach the engine lifting equipment to the engine.
  44.  
  45. Check that all wiring and hoses air clear of the engine and transmission.
  46.  
  47. Carefully raise the engine and transmission assembly out of the engine compartment, being especially careful not to damage the air conditioning compressor, if so equipped.
  48.  
  49. Remove the starter, and with the help of an assistant, disconnect the transmission from the engine. Mount the engine securely in a workstand and service the engine as necessary, according to the appropriate sections of this guide.
  50.  
  51. Follow the removal steps on installation of the engine. Adjust all of the linkages as detailed in the appropriate section. Install the hood and adjust it. Replenish the fluid levels in the engine, radiator and transmission.
  52.  

4wd Pick-Ups-1970-82

CAUTION
Be sure to support the rear of the engine with a jack to avoid damage to the front motor mounts while performing engine removal procedures.

  1. Set the engine to top dead center according to the marks on the vibration damper and timing cover pointer.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and transfer case according to the procedures found in the appropriate sections.
  4.  
  5. Make accurate marks on the body to indicate the relationship between the hood supports and the body. Unbolt the hood supports at the body and remove the hood.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery and the air cleaner assembly. Mark the hoses from the air cleaner to simplify installation.
  8.  

  1. Drain the cooling system and remove the radiator hoses.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator fan shroud and disconnect the heater outlet hose at the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor drive belt, unbolt the compressor and tie it out of the way. It is not necessary to disconnect the refrigerant lines.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump drive belt, pulley and cooling fan.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the heater inlet hose, brake booster hose and emission control hoses. Move the hoses out of the way and tie if necessary. Mark the hose locations to simplify installation.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the two fuel hoses from the pipes beneath the intake manifold.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect all wiring attached to the engine. Mark the wire locations to simplify installation.
  16.  
  17. Remove the wiring from the spark plugs, distributor and ignition coil. Be sure to mark the spark plug wire locations.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the accelerator linkage at the carburetor.
  20.  
  21. Attach an engine hoist to the engine but do not raise the hoist.
  22.  
  23. Remove the two engine mount-to-frame bolts from each side of the engine.
  24.  
  25. Be sure that all wires and hoses are clear of the engine.
  26.  
  27. Carefully raise the engine out of the engine compartment, being especially careful not to damage the air conditioning condenser, if so equipped.
  28.  
  29. Securely mount the engine on a workstand.
  30.  
  31. Perform the necessary service(s) to the engine according to the appropriate sections of the guide.
  32.  
  33. Follow the removal steps on installation of the engine. Adjust all of the linkages as detailed in the appropriate section. Install the hood and adjust it. Replenish the fluid levels in the engine, radiator and transmission.
  34.  

Pick-Up-1983-88
22R ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the windshield washer hose and then remove the hood. Scribe matchmarks around the hinges for easy installation.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator and the cylinder block.
  8.  

  1. Drain the automatic transmission fluid on models so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air cleaner hose and then remove the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator and shroud as detailed later in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coupling fan.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the two heater hoses at the engine.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the accelerator cable at the carburetor.
  12.  
  13. Tag and disconnect the following wires:
    1. VSV wire at the EVAP canister
    2.  
    3. VSV wire at the air conditioning compressor
    4.  
    5. Vacuum switch wire
    6.  
    7. HAC wire (ex. Calif.)
    8.  
    9. Cold mixture heater wire
    10.  
    11. Fuel cut solenoid wire
    12.  
    13. Water temperature sender gauge wire
    14.  
    15. EACV wire (Calif.)
    16.  
    17. Starter wire
    18.  
    19. Oil pressure switch wire.
    20.  

  14.  
  15. Disconnect the following parts:
    1. Brake booster hose
    2.  
    3. Main fuel line at the fuel inlet pipe
    4.  
    5. Fuel return line at the fuel return pipe
    6.  
    7. Charcoal canister hose.
    8.  

  16.  
  17. Remove the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump from its bracket (if equipped). Disconnect the ground strap from the bracket.
  20.  
  21. On models with air conditioning, loosen the drive belt and remove the air conditioning compressor. Position it out of the way with the refrigerant lines still attached.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the engine ground straps at the rear and right side of the engine.
  24.  
  25. On trucks with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever from inside the truck.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  28.  
  29. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect the manual shift linkage at the neutral start switch. On 4wd models with automatic transmission, disconnect the transfer shift linkage.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the speedometer cable. Be sure not to lose the felt dust protector and washers.
  32.  
  33. Remove the transfer case undercover (4wd only).
  34.  
  35. Remove the stabilizer bar (4wd only).
  36.  
  37. Remove the front driveshaft (4wd only).
  38.  
  39. Remove the No. 1 frame crossmember.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe at the manifold and tail pipe and remove the exhaust pipe.
  42.  
  43. On models with manual transmission, remove the clutch release cylinder and its bracket from the transmission.
  44.  
  45. Remove the No. 1 front floor heat insulator and the brake tube heat insulator (4wd only).
  46.  
  47. On 2wd models, remove the four rear engine mount bolts, raise the transmission slightly with a floor jack and then remove the four support member mounting bolts.
  48.  
  49. On 4wd models, remove the four rear engine mount bolts, raise the transmission slightly with a floor jack and then remove the four bolts from the side member and remove the No. 2 frame crossmember.
  50.  
  51. Attach an engine hoist chain to the lifting brackets on the engine. Remove the engine mount nuts and bolts and slowly lift the engine/transmission out of the truck.
  52.  

To install:
  1. Slowly lower the engine assembly into the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission onto the crossmember with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Align the holes in the engine mounts and the frame, install the bolts and then remove the engine hoist chain.
  6.  
  7. On 2wd models, raise the transmission slightly and align the rear engine mount with the support member and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Lower the transmission until it rests on the extension housing and then tighten the bracket mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. On 4wd models, Raise the transmission slightly and tighten the No. 2 frame crossmember-to-side frame bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm). Lower the transmission and tighten the four rear engine mount bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  10.  
  11. On 4wd models, install the brake tube and front floor heat insulators.
  12.  
  13. Install the clutch release cylinder and its bracket to the manual transmission. Tighten the bracket bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the cylinder bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the exhaust pipe.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 1 frame crossmember.
  18.  
  19. On 4wd models, install the front driveshaft, stabilizer bar and the transfer case undercover.
  20.  
  21. Connect the speedometer cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the transfer shift linkage on 4wd models with automatic transmission.
  24.  
  25. Connect the manual shift linkage to the neutral start switch (automatic transmission only).
  26.  
  27. Install the rear driveshaft.
  28.  
  29. Install the shift lever (manual transmission only).
  30.  
  31. Connect the engine ground straps.
  32.  
  33. Install the air conditioning compressor.
  34.  
  35. Install the power steering pump and connect the ground strap.
  36.  
  37. Install the drive belt.
  38.  
  39. Connect all parts removed in Step 12 of the removal procedure.
  40.  
  41. Connect all wires removed in Step 11 of the removal procedure.
  42.  
  43. Connect the accelerator cable to the carburetor-don't forget the tension spring.
  44.  
  45. Install the radiator and shroud. Install the coupling fan.
  46.  
  47. Connect the two heater hoses and install the air cleaner.
  48.  
  49. Refill the engine with oil and the radiator with coolant.
  50.  
  51. Install the engine undercover.
  52.  
  53. Install and adjust the hood.
  54.  
  55. Connect the battery cable, start the truck and road test it.
  56.  

22R-E AND 22R-TE ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the windshield washer hose and then remove the hood. Scribe matchmarks around the hinges for easy installation.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator and the cylinder block.
  8.  

  1. Drain the automatic transmission fluid on models so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the air cleaner hose and then remove the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator and shroud as detailed later in this section. Remember to disconnect the No. 1 turbocharger water line on the 22R-TE.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coupling fan.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the two heater hoses at the engine.
  10.  
  11. On models with automatic transmissions, disconnect the accelerator and throttle cables at their bracket.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the following:
    1. No. 1 and No. 2 PCV hoses.
    2.  
    3. Brake booster hose.
    4.  
    5. Air control valve hoses.
    6.  
    7. EVAP hose at the canister.
    8.  
    9. Actuator hose on models with cruise control.
    10.  
    11. Vacuum modulator hose at the EGR valve.
    12.  
    13. Air valve hoses at the throttle body and chamber.
    14.  
    15. Two water by-pass hoses at the throttle body.
    16.  
    17. Air control valve hose at the actuator.
    18.  
    19. Pressure regulator hose at the chamber.
    20.  
    21. Cold start injector pipe.
    22.  
    23. BVSV hose.
    24.  

  14.  
  15. Tag and disconnect the cold start injector wire and the throttle position sensor wire.
  16.  
  17. Remove the EGR valve from the throttle chamber.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the throttle chamber at the stay. Remove the chamber-to-intake manifold mounting bolts and lift off the throttle chamber.
  20.  
  21. Tag and disconnect the following wires:
    1. Cold start injector time switch wire
    2.  
    3. Water temperature sensor wire
    4.  
    5. On models with air conditioning: VSV and air conditioning compressor wires
    6.  
    7. O 2 sensor wire (22R-TE only)
    8.  
    9. OD temperature switch wire (models w/AT)
    10.  
    11. Injector wires
    12.  
    13. Knock sensor connector
    14.  
    15. Air valve wire
    16.  
    17. Oil pressure switch wire
    18.  
    19. Starter wire.
    20.  

  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering pump from its bracket (if equipped). Disconnect the ground strap from the bracket.
  24.  
  25. On models with air conditioning, loosen the drive belt and remove the air conditioning compressor. Position it out of the way with the refrigerant lines still attached.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the engine ground straps at the rear and right side of the engine.
  28.  
  29. On trucks with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever from inside the truck.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  32.  
  33. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect the manual shift linkage at the neutral start switch. On 4wd models with automatic transmission, disconnect the transfer shift linkage.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the speedometer cable. Be sure not to lose the felt dust protector and washers.
  36.  
  37. Remove the transfer case undercover (4wd only).
  38.  
  39. Remove the stabilizer bar (4wd only).
  40.  
  41. Remove the front driveshaft (4wd only).
  42.  
  43. Remove the No. 1 frame crossmember.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe at the manifold and tail pipe and remove the exhaust pipe.
  46.  
  47. On models with manual transmission, remove the clutch release cylinder and its bracket from the transmission.
  48.  
  49. Remove the No. 1 front floor heat insulator and the brake tube heat insulator (4wd only).
  50.  
  51. On 2wd models, remove the four rear engine mount bolts, raise the transmission slightly with a floor jack and then remove the four support member mounting bolts.
  52.  
  53. On 4wd models, remove the four rear engine mount bolts, raise the transmission slightly with a floor jack and then remove the four bolts from the side member and remove the No. 2 frame crossmember.
  54.  
  55. Attach an engine hoist chain to the lifting brackets on the engine. Remove the engine mount nuts and bolts and slowly lift the engine/transmission out of the truck.
  56.  

To install:
  1. Slowly lower the engine assembly into the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission onto the crossmember with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Align the holes in the engine mounts and the frame, install the bolts and then remove the engine hoist chain.
  6.  
  7. On 2wd models, raise the transmission slightly and align the rear engine mount with the support member and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Lower the transmission until it rests on the extension housing and then tighten the bracket mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. On 4wd models, Raise the transmission slightly and tighten the No. 2 frame crossmember-to-side frame bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm). Lower the transmission and tighten the four rear engine mount bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  10.  
  11. On 4wd models, install the brake tube and front floor heat insulators.
  12.  
  13. Install the clutch release cylinder and its bracket to the manual transmission. Tighten the bracket bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the cylinder bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the exhaust pipe.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 1 frame crossmember.
  18.  
  19. On 4wd models, install the front driveshaft, stabilizer bar and the transfer case undercover.
  20.  
  21. Connect the speedometer cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the transfer shift linkage on 4wd models with automatic transmission.
  24.  
  25. Connect the manual shift linkage to the neutral start switch (automatic transmission only).
  26.  
  27. Install the rear driveshaft.
  28.  
  29. Install the shift lever (manual transmission only).
  30.  
  31. Connect the engine ground straps.
  32.  
  33. Install the air conditioning compressor.
  34.  
  35. Install the power steering pump and connect the ground strap.
  36.  
  37. Connect all wires removed in Step 15 of the removal procedure.
  38.  
  39. Install the throttle chamber.
  40.  
  41. Connect all parts removed in Step 11 of the removal procedure.
  42.  
  43. Connect the accelerator and throttle cables to the bracket (automatic transmission only).
  44.  
  45. Connect the heater hoses and install the coupling fan.
  46.  
  47. Install the radiator and shroud.
  48.  
  49. Install the air cleaner. Refill the engine with oil and the radiator with coolant.
  50.  
  51. Install the engine undercover.
  52.  
  53. Install and adjust the hood.
  54.  
  55. Connect the battery cable, start the truck and road test it.
  56.  

3VZ-E ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the windshield washer hose and then remove the hood. Scribe matchmarks around the hinges for easy installation.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator and the cylinder block.
  8.  
  9. Drain the automatic transmission fluid on models so equipped.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the air cleaner hose and then remove the air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the radiator.
  14.  
  15. Remove all drive belts and then remove the fluid coupling and fan pulley.
  16.  
  17. Tag and disconnect the following wires and connectors:
    1. Left side and rear ground straps
    2.  
    3. Alternator connector and wire
    4.  
    5. Igniter connector
    6.  
    7. Oil pressure switch connector
    8.  
    9. ECU connectors
    10.  
    11. VSV connectors
    12.  
    13. Starter relay connector (manual transmission only)
    14.  
    15. Solenoid resistor connector
    16.  
    17. Check connector
    18.  
    19. Air conditioning compressor connector
    20.  

  18.  
  19. Tag and disconnect the following hoses:
    1. Power steering hoses at the gas filter and air pipe
    2.  
    3. Brake booster hose
    4.  
    5. Cruise control vacuum hose (if equipped)
    6.  
    7. Charcoal canister hose at the canister
    8.  
    9. VSV vacuum hoses.
    10.  

  20.  
  21. Disconnect the accelerator, throttle and cruise control cables where applicable.
  22.  
  23. Unbolt the power steering pump and position it out of the way with the hydraulic lines still connected.
  24.  
  25. Remove the air conditioning compressor if equipped.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the clutch release cylinder hose (manual transmission only).
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the two heater hoses.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect and plug the fuel inlet and outlet lines.
  32.  
  33. Remove the shift levers (manual transmission only).
  34.  
  35. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the manual shift linkage (automatic transmission only).
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the speedometer cable - don't lose the felt dust protector and washers.
  40.  
  41. Remove the transfer case undercover.
  42.  
  43. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  44.  
  45. Remove the front drive shaft.
  46.  
  47. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  48.  
  49. Remove the No. 1 front floor heat insulator and the brake tube heat insulator.
  50.  
  51. Remove the four rear engine mount bolts, raise the transmission slightly with a floor jack and then remove the four bolts from the side member and remove the No. 2 frame crossmember.
  52.  
  53. Attach an engine hoist chain to the lifting brackets on the engine. Remove the engine mount nuts and bolts and slowly lift the engine/transmission out of the truck.
  54.  

To install:
  1. Slowly lower the engine assembly into the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission onto the crossmember with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Align the holes in the engine mounts and the frame, install the bolts and then remove the engine hoist chain.
  6.  
  7. Raise the transmission slightly and tighten the No. 2 frame crossmember-to-side frame bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm). Lower the transmission and tighten the four rear engine mount bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake tube and front floor heat insulators.

  11. Reconnect the exhaust pipe.
  12.  
  13. Install the No. 1 frame crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Install the front driveshaft, stabilizer bar and the transfer case undercover.
  16.  
  17. Connect the speedometer cable.
  18.  
  19. Connect the manual shift linkage (automatic transmission only).
  20.  
  21. Install the rear driveshaft.
  22.  
  23. Install the shift levers (manual transmission only).
  24.  
  25. Install the fuel inlet and outlet lines.
  26.  
  27. Connect the heater hoses.
  28.  
  29. Connect the clutch release cylinder hose.
  30.  
  31. Install the air conditioning compressor.
  32.  
  33. Install the power steering pump and connect the ground strap.
  34.  
  35. Connect the throttle, cruise control and accelerator cables.
  36.  
  37. Connect the hoses removed in Step 10 of the removal procedure.
  38.  
  39. Connect the wires removed in Step 9 of the removal procedure.
  40.  
  41. Install the fan pulley, belt guide, fluid coupling and drive belt.
  42.  
  43. Install the air conditioning belt.
  44.  
  45. Install the power steering pump and connect the ground strap.
  46.  
  47. Install the radiator and shroud.
  48.  
  49. Install the air cleaner. Refill the engine with oil and the radiator with coolant.
  50.  
  51. Install the engine undercover. Install the battery.
  52.  
  53. Install and adjust the hood.
  54.  
  55. Install the battery, start the truck and road test it.
  56.  

Land Cruiser
F AND 2F ENGINES
  1. Scribe marks on the hood and hinges to aid in alignment during installation. Remove the hinge bolt from the hood and then remove the hood.
  2.  

  1. Drain the cooling system and engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the radiator grille mounting bolts and remove the grille.
  4.  

Remove the parking light assembly and wiring first, if necessary.

  1. Remove the hood latch support rod. Detach the hood latch assembly from the radiator upper bracket. Remove the bracket.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the heater hose from the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Detach the upper radiator hose at the water outlet housing and the lower hose at water pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the six bolts which secure the radiator and lift the radiator out of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater hoses from the water valve and heater box. Disconnect the temperature control cable from the water valve.
  10.  
  11. Detach both the battery cables and remove the battery.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wires from the starter solenoid terminal.
  14.  
  15. Detach the fuel lines from the pump and remove the fuel filter assembly.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the primary wire from the ignition coil.
  18.  
  19. Detach both of the intermediate rods from the shifter shafts (column shift models only).
  20.  
  21. Remove the air cleaner assembly, complete with hoses, from its bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the emission control system cables and hoses as necessary.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the alternator multiconnector.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the hand throttle, accelerator, and choke linkage from the carburetor.
  28.  
  29. On models equipped with vacuum assisted 4WD engagement, remove the control unit vacuum hose from its manifold fitting.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the oil pressure and water temperature gauge sender's wiring.
  32.  
  33. Unfasten the downpipe from the exhaust manifold.
  34.  
  35. Detach the parking brake cable from the intermediate lever.
  36.  
  37. Unbolt the front driveshaft from the flange on the transfer case output shaft.
  38.  
  39. Remove both the left and right engine stone shields. Remove the transmission skidplate.
  40.  
  41. Remove the cotter pin and disconnect both the high- and low-range shifter link lever and the high/low shift rod.
  42.  
  43. Remove the high/low range shifter link lever and the high/low shift rod.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the clutch release fork spring. Remove the clutch release cylinder from its mounting bracket at the rear of the engine.
  46.  
  47. Unfasten the clamp screws and withdraw the vacuum lines from the transfer case control unit vacuum chamber (only on models with vacuum assist 4WD engagement).
  48.  
  49. Remove the 4WD indicator switch assembly.
  50.  
  51. Unfasten the speedometer cable from the transmission.
  52.  
  53. Detach the gearshift rod and gear selector rod from the shift outer lever and the gear selector outer lever respectively.
  54.  
  55. Unbolt the rear engine mounts from the frame.
  56.  
  57. Perform Step 31 to the front engine mounts.
  58.  
  59. Install lifting hooks on the engine lift points and connect a hoist.
  60.  
  61. Lift the engine slightly and toward the front, so the engine/transmission assembly clears the front of the vehicle.
  62.  

Follow the removal steps on installation of the engine. Adjust all of the linkages as detailed in the appropriate section. Install the hood and adjust it. Replenish the fluid levels in the engine, radiator and transmission. Install the hood and align the matchmarks.

3F-E ENGINES
  1. Drain the engine coolant. Drain the engine oil.
  2.  

  1. Scribe matchmarks around the hood hinges and then remove the hood.
  2.  
  3. Remove the battery and its tray.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the accelerator and throttle cables.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake hose, air flow meter and air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coolant reservoir tank.
  10.  
  11. Remove the radiator.
  12.  
  13. Tag and disconnect the following wires and connectors:
    1. Oil pressure connector
    2.  
    3. High tension cord at the coil
    4.  
    5. Neutral start switch and transfer connectors near the starter
    6.  
    7. Front differential lock connector
    8.  
    9. Starter wire and connector
    10.  
    11. Starter ground strap
    12.  
    13. O 2 sensor connectors
    14.  
    15. Alternator wire and connector
    16.  
    17. Cooling fan connector
    18.  
    19. Check connector.
    20.  

  14.  
  15. Disconnect the following hoses:
    1. Heater hoses
    2.  
    3. Fuel hoses
    4.  
    5. Transfer hose
    6.  
    7. Brake booster hose
    8.  
    9. AI hoses
    10.  
    11. Distributor hose
    12.  
    13. Emission control hoses.
    14.  

  16.  
  17. Remove the glove box, pull out the four connectors and then pull the EFI wiring harness from the cowl.
  18.  
  19. Unbolt the power steering pump and position it out of the way with the hoses still connected.
  20.  
  21. Do the same with the air conditioning compressor.
  22.  
  23. Raise the truck and remove the transfer case undercover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front and rear driveshafts.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the engine ground strap.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the two vacuum hoses at the diaphragm cylinder underneath the transfer case.
  32.  
  33. Remove the clip and pin and then disconnect the shift rod at the transfer case. Remove the nut, disconnect the washers and the shift lever at the shift rod.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the transmission control rod.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  38.  
  39. With a floor jack under the transmission, remove the eight bolts and two nuts that attach the frame crossmember and then remove the crossmember.
  40.  
  41. Attach an engine hoist chain to the lifting brackets on the engine. Remove the engine mount nuts and bolts and slowly lift the engine/transmission out of the truck.
  42.  

To install:
  1. Slowly lower the engine assembly into the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission onto the crossmember with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Align the holes in the engine mounts and the frame, install the bolts and then remove the engine hoist chain.
  6.  
  7. Raise the transmission slightly and tighten the frame crossmember-to-chassis bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Tighten the two nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the exhaust pipe with a new gasket and tighten the nuts (new!) to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the transmission control rod.
  12.  
  13. Connect the transfer case shift lever.
  14.  
  15. Connect the engine ground strap. Connect the speedometer cable.
  16.  
  17. Install the front and rear driveshafts. Tighten the nuts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the transfer case undercover.
  20.  
  21. Install the air conditioning compressor. Install the power steering pump and tighten the pulley nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the EFI wiring harness at the ECU.
  24.  
  25. Connect the hoses removed in Step 9 of the removal procedure.
  26.  
  27. Connect the wires and connectors removed in Step 8 of the removal procedure.
  28.  
  29. Install the radiator and the coolant reservoir tank.
  30.  
  31. Install the air intake hose, air flow meter and air cleaner.
  32.  
  33. Connect the accelerator and throttle cables. Be sure to adjust them.
  34.  
  35. Refill the engine with oil and the radiator with coolant.
  36.  
  37. Install the engine undercover. Install the battery.
  38.  
  39. Install and adjust the hood.
  40.  
  41. Install the battery, start the truck and road test it.
  42.
