REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1980-84

CAUTION
When working on the exhaust system, ALWAYS wear protective goggles! NEVER work on a hot exhaust system.

  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heat shield if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the thermosensor wiring connector inside the passenger compartment.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring grommet from the floor pan and pull the connector from the interior.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four bolts at the front and rear of the converter.
  10.  


CAUTION
Make sure the converter is cool!

  1. Remove the rubber hanger rings and remove the converter.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Remove the thermosensor from the converter case.
  2.  
  3. Position a new gasket on the thermosensor and push the sensor into the converter case. Tighten the mounting bolts to 53-78 inch lbs.
  4.  

Replacement converters are fitted with a plastic thermosensor guide. Insert the thermosensor into this guide.

  1. Using new gaskets, connect the converter to the exhaust pipes. Tighten the bolts to 26-36 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Stretch the rubber rings over the hangers and then plug in the thermosensor connector.
  4.  

After installation, make sure that the sensor wire is not bent or interfering with other components.

1985-88
  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heat shield if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the four bolts at the front and rear of the converter.
  6.  


CAUTION
Make sure the converter is cool!

  1. Remove the converter and gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Using new gaskets, connect the converter to the exhaust pipes. Tighten the bolts to 26-36 ft. lbs.
  4.
