Manual Steering Gear

ADJUSTMENTS



Adjustments to the manual steering gear are not necessary during normal service. Adjustments are performed only as part of overhaul.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-78 Pick-Up-2WD
  1. Remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft with a puller.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the flexible coupling and the wormshaft and remove the lock bolt.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt and remove the steering gear housing.
  6.  
  7. Torque the housing bolts to 26-36 ft. lbs., and the pitman arm to 80-90 ft. lbs. Tighten the coupling yoke to 15-20 ft. lbs.
  8.  

1979-88 Pick-Up-2WD

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the steering coupling set bolt where it connects to the worm shaft.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the relay rod from the pitman arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 3 mounting bolts and lift out the steering gear housing.
  6.  
  7. Position the gear housing so that the worm shaft is lined up in the steering coupling and tighten the mounting bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the pitman arm mounting nut to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the pitman arm to the relay rod and tighten the nut to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the coupling set bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Fill the gear housing with gear oil.

1970-85 Pick-Up-4WD

See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft with a puller.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark and then loosen the intermediate shaft coupling at the steering gear wormshaft.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the bolt holding the intermediate shaft at the coupling near the fire wall and slide the shaft up off the steering gear wormshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 bolts on the steering gear base and remove the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Install the gear housing and observe the following torques:

    Steering gear housing to frame: 37-47 ft. lbs.
     
    Pitman arm to sector shaft: 116-137 ft. lbs.
     
    Wormshaft coupling bolt: 22-32 ft. lbs.

1986-88 Pick-Up and 4Runner-4WD
  1. Remove the joint protector set bolt.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the universal joint to the worm shaft and remove the 2 U-joint bolts. Disconnect the U-joint from the worm shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pitman arm set nut and then disconnect the arm from the gear housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 housing-to-frame mounting bolts and lift out the gear housing.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the housing and tighten the 3 bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the U-joint to the worm shaft so that the marks are in alignment and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the joint protector and its bracket set bolt.
  6.  
  7. Connect the pitman arm and tighten the nut to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  8.  

1971-83 Land Cruiser
55 SERIES
  1. Remove the worm yoke from the worm and main shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intermediate shaft assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt and remove the gear housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the housing and tighten the pitman arm to 119-141 ft. lbs.
  10.  

The intermediate shaft must be installed with the wheels in a straight ahead position and the steering wheel straight ahead.

40 SERIES
  1. Remove the horn button assembly and, using a puller, remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column jacket lower clamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove the turn signal switch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column access plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the carburetor and oil filter (not necessary on 1975-76 models).
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the No. 1 shift rod and select rod at the ends of the shift controls and select levers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shift control and bracket clamp.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shift control lever, select lever, control shaft lower bracket, control shaft lower speed lever, and control shaft lower bracket.
  16.  
  17. Pull the control shaft out toward the driver's side.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pitman arm with a puller.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering gear box bracket cap and lift out the gear box.
  22.  
  23. Install the gear housing and tighten the gear box bracket cap to 75-90 ft. lbs. (30-40 for 1975-76); the pitman arm to 120-140 ft. lbs., the steering wheel nut to 30-50 ft. lbs.
  24.  

1984-88 Land Cruiser

See Figure 4

  1. Remove the joint protector set bolt.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the universal joint to the worm shaft and remove the 2 U-joint bolts. Disconnect the U-joint from the worm shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pitman arm set nut and then disconnect the arm from the gear housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 housing-to-frame mounting bolts and lift out the gear housing.
  8.  
  9. Position the housing and tighten the 4 bolts to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the U-joint to the worm shaft so that the marks are in alignment and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the joint protector and its bracket set bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the pitman arm and tighten the nut to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
