REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pick-Up-2WD

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering coupling-to-gear set bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel finish facia. Remove the air duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper and lower column covers and then remove the combination switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 5 mounting bolts where the column hole cover attaches to the firewall.
  12.  
  13. Remove the column-to-gear mounting bolts and pull out the shaft.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the column and install the coupling on the worm shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the column bracket bolts by hand.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column hole cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the column bracket mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the coupling set bolt and tighten it to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the combination switch and the column covers.
  12.  
  13. Install the air duct and the lower finish panel.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel and connect the negative battery cable.

Pick-Up and 4Runner-4WD

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intermediate shaft joint protector at the gear housing.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the joint yoke and the worm shaft. Remove the 2 mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Pull the intermediate shaft from the gear housing and then pull it out from the main shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower instrument panel finish facia. Remove the air duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower column covers and then remove the combination switch.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 5 mounting bolts where the column hole cover attaches to the firewall.
  16.  
  17. Remove the column-to-gear mounting bolts and pull out the shaft.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the column and install the coupling on the worm shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the column bracket bolts by hand.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column hole cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the column bracket mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Insert the intermediate shaft into the joint yoke so that the non-toothed portions are lined up.
  10.  
  11. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and the worm shaft. Tighten the set bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the joint yoke bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the joint protector to the gear housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the combination switch and the column covers.
  16.  
  17. Install the air duct and the lower finish panel.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering wheel and connect the negative battery cable.

Pick-Up-Column Shift

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the set bolt at the coupling.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the transmission linkage under the truck.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower instrument panel finish facia. Remove the air duct.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper and lower column covers and then remove the combination switch.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 5 mounting bolts where the column hole cover attaches to the firewall.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 break-away bracket mounting bolts and pull out the shaft.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the column and install the coupling on the worm shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the break-away bracket bolts by hand.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column hole cover and tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the column bracket mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the combination switch and the column covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the air duct and the lower finish panel.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the coupling set bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the transmission linkage.

Land Cruiser

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the No. 1 and No. 2 joint yokes on the intermediate shaft. Remove the set bolt and pull out the shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower air duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the column cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the combination switch.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 4 bolts from the column hole cover.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the ignition switch connector, remove the 2 mounting nuts and pull out the steering column assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the steering column assembly and install the break-away bracket bolts temporarily.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the 4 column hole cover bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Tighten the 2 break-away bracket bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the combination switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the column cover and air duct.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Install the intermediate shaft and tighten the set bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
