Lower Ball Joint

INSPECTION

To check the lower ball joint for wear, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it with stands. Remove excess play from the other suspension parts (wheel bearings, tie rods, etc.). Have an assistant press the brake pedal; Move the lower suspension arm up and down, checking that the lower ball joint has minimal play, if any. The maximum allowable vertical play is 0.079 in. (2.3mm). If the play is greater, replace the ball joint. The upper ball joint is subject to the same limit on trucks; the 4Runner upper ball joint must have no play at all. The upper ball joint is tested by moving the wheel and tire up and down.
