REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Land Cruiser

See Figure 1

  1. Elevate and safely support the vehicle. Make certain the jackstands are securely placed under the frame rails.
  2.
  3. Use a floor jack to slightly jack and support the front axle housing. Hold the piston rod of the shock absorber and remove the upper mounting nut. Hold the shock and remove the lower mounting nut, the cushions and the retainer.

Fig. Fig. 1: Exploded view of the coil spring and associated components-Land Cruiser

  1. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the axle housing.
  2.
  3. Lower the jack holding the front axle. Use a spring compressor to compress the spring. Remove the spring, still compressed, from the vehicle. Place the spring, facing away from you, on the work bench and slowly release the tension on the compressor. When the spring is fully extended, remove the tool.
  4.
  5. Remove the follow spring nuts and spring.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the follow spring, tighten the nuts to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  2.
  3. Compress the spring and fit it into position in the vehicle. Align the end with the lower spring seat; slowly release the compressor, allowing the spring to expand into place.
  4.
  5. Install the stabilizer bar.
  6.
  7. Install the shock absorber. Tighten the lower mounting nut to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm) and then the upper mount to the same value.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  10.

4Runner

See Figure 2

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the shock absorber from the the lower control arm. When you lower the arm, remove the bolt and disconnect the shock absorber.

Fig. Fig. 2: Exploded view of the coil spring and related suspension components-4Runner

  1. Remove the shock and coil spring as an assembly.
  2.
  3. Using a spring compressor, compress the spring until there is a clearance on both ends. Remove the suspension support center nut.
  4.
  5. Remove the 2 retainers, cushion, suspension support and coil spring.
  6.

To install:
  1. Using a compression tool, compress the coil spring. Do not compress the spring more than necessary and do not use an impact wrench.
  2.
  3. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the spring seat of the shock absorber.
  4.
  5. Attach the spring and shock into the vehicle, tighten the mounting nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6.
  7. Attach the shock to the lower control arm, tighten to 101 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the wheel, tighten the lug nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  10.

Tacoma

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.
  3. Elevate and safely support the vehicle. Make certain the jackstands are securely placed under the frame rails.
  4.
  5. Use a floor jack to slightly jack and support the front axle housing.
  6.
  7. Remove the front wheel.

Fig. Fig. 3: Loosen the bolt at the bottom of the shock absorber

  1. Disconnect the shock absorber from the lower control arm as follows:
    1. Loosen the bolt, then remove the shock absorber lower nut.
    2.
    3. While lowering the lower control arm, remove the bolt then disconnect the shock.
    4.

  2.
  3. Remove the shock mounting nuts and coil spring as an assembly.

Fig. Fig. 5: A spring compressor is a must for this job; follow the manufacturer's instructions

  1. Remove the insulator from the suspension support.
  2.

To install:
  1. Match the bolt of the suspension support with the cut out part of the insulator, install the insulator to the support.
  2.
  3. Using the spring compressor, compress the spring and install the shock. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the gap of the spring seat of the shock.
  4.
  5. Install the suspension support rod. Temporarily tighten the new suspension support center nut. Position the support so that the line drawn between the 2 bolts would be parallel to the direction of the lower bushing.
  6.
  7. Remove the compressor tool.
  8.
  9. Check that the direction of the support again. Tighten the center nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  10.
  11. Attach the coil and shock assembly to the top portion of the engine compartment. Tighten the nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  12.
  13. Attach the shock to the lower control arm, then tighten the mounting bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  14.
  15. Attach the wheel, hand tighten the lug nuts.
  16.
  17. Lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts.
