REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Tacoma and 4Runner

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  4.

  1. Loosen the four bolts attaching the lower ball joint. Do not remove them. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end. Throw out the old cotter pin. With special tool 09610-20012 or equivalent, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

  1. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint. Discard the cotter pin.
  2.  
  3. With a ball joint remover such as tool 09628-62011 or equivalent, separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
  4.

  1. Remove the four mounting bolts. When lifting the upper control arm and steering knuckle, remove the ball joint. After the ball joint is removed, support the upper control arm and knuckle securely.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the ball joint with the mounting nut and bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the nut to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm) on the Tacoma, or 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm) on the 4Runner. Install a new cotter pin in the hole.
  4.  
  5. Attach the tie rod end tightening the nut to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the lower ball joint set bolts, 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) 4Runner, 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the jack slowly, making sure everything is secure and in place.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  12.  
  13. Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
  14.  
  15. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  16.  

T100
  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
  4.  
  5. With the aid of a ball joint separator, disconnect the joint from the steering knuckle.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Attach the ball joint to the knuckle with the special installer tool.
  2.  
  3. Attach the ball joint to the steering knuckle, tighten the nut to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm). Use a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Install the front wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  6.  
  7. Have the alignment checked at a reputable repair facility.
  8.
