Upper Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pick-Up and 4Runner
1989-95 MODELS
  1. Raise the truck and support it on safety stands. Remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the torsion bar.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cotter pin and nut and press the upper ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock absorber mounting nut. Do not disconnect the lower end of the shock.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear housing. Remove the 2 nuts and bolt and lift out the upper arm.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper arm and tighten the mounting bolts to 131 ft. lbs. (178 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear housing.
  4.  
  5. Install a new upper shock absorber nut. Tighten it to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Attach the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle, then tighten the nut to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the torsion bar.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Have the alignment checked and adjusted at a reputable repair facility.
  14.  

1996 MODELS
  1. Remove the shock and coil spring assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the upper ball joint as follows:
    1. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the nut.
    2.  
    3. Using a ball joint separator, disconnect the upper ball joint from the control arm.
    4.  
    5. Support the steering knuckle securely.
    6.  
    7. Remove the nut.
    8.

  7. Detach the control arm, by removing the nut, bolt, washers and lowering the arm.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Attach the upper control arm with the washer, bolt and nut. Make sure the arm is stabilized, then tighten the nut to 87 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the upper ball joint to the control arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 80 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Attach the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp, tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the shock and coil spring assembly.
  8.  
  9. Check the alignment.
  10.  

Tacoma
  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock and coil spring assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the upper ball joint as follows:
    1. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the nut.
    2.  
    3. Using a ball joint separator, disconnect the upper ball joint from the control arm.
    4.  
    5. Support the steering knuckle securely.
    6.  
    7. Remove the nut.
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Detach the control arm, by removing the nut, bolt, washers and lowering the arm.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Attach the upper control arm with the washer, bolt and nut. Make sure the arm is stabilized, then tighten the nut to 87 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the upper ball joint to the control arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 80 ft. lbs. (105 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  4.  
  5. Attach the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp, tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the shock and coil spring assembly.
  8.  
  9. Check the alignment.
  10.  

T100
  1. Raise the truck and support it on safety stands. Remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove the torsion bar.
  6.  
  7. Remove upper ball joint out of the steering knuckle as follows:
    1. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nuts, then disconnect the upper control arm from the steering knuckle.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolts, then remove the upper control arm from thew frame.
    6.

To install:
  1. Install the upper arm and tighten the mounting bolts to 131 ft. lbs. (178 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle, then tighten the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the torsion bar.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel(s) and lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Have the alignment checked and adjusted at a reputable repair facility.
  10.
