Crankshaft Position Sensor

OPERATION



This sensor is essentially a pick-up coil. While the crankshaft rotates, the air gap between the protrusion on the timing rotor and the pick-up coil changes. This causes fluctuation in the magnetic field and generates a varying voltage signal in the pick-up coil. It is used by the ECM to determine crankshaft angle and speed based upon the voltage received.

TESTING



1FZ-FE Engine
  1. Unplug the sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the sensor terminals. It should be between 240-325 ohms.
  4.  
  5. If not as specified, replace the sensor.
  6.  

5VZ-FE, 2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE Engines

  1. Unplug the sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between the sensor terminals. It should be between 2065-3225 ohms.
  4.  
  5. If not as specified, replace the sensor.
  6.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



5VZ-FE Engine

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor harness.
  2.

  1. Remove the bolt retaining the sensor to the vehicle.
  2.

  1. Attach the sensor to the vehicle, tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the sensor harness.
  4.  

2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE Engines

See Figure 3

  1. Remove the engine under cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the alternator.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the alternator bracket.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor harness.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the sensor and the sensor. Discard the O-ring.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the O-ring, install on the sensor.
  2.  
  3. Attach the sensor to the engine, tighten to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the sensor harness.
  6.  
  7. Install the alternator bracket, tighten bolt (A) to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) and bolt (B) to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  1. Install the alternator on the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine under cover.
  4.  

1FZ-FE Engine

See Figure 4

  1. Remove the engine under cover.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the sensor protector.
  4.

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor bracket and harness.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt, nuts and sensor.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Attach the sensor with the nuts and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the nuts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the bracket and harness.
  4.  
  5. Install the sensor protector, tighten the mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the engine under cover.
  8.
