Knock Sensor

OPERATION

Located in the engine block or cylinder head, the Knock Sensor (KS) retards ignition timing during a spark knock condition to allow the ECM to maintain maximum timing advance under most conditions.

TESTING

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the knock sensor(s).
  2.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between the terminal and the body. If there is continuity replace the sensor.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 2

A Toyota special tool or an equivalent socket, may be needed to remove and install the knock sensor. On the 2RZ-FE, 3RZ-FE and 1FZ-FE engines use SST 09816-30010. For the 5VZ-FE use SST 09817-16011.

Excluding 5VZ-FE Engines
  1. Disconnect the sensor wire.
  2.
  3. Remove the sensor with the aid of the appropriate SST tool or the equivalent.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the sensor, tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  2.
  3. Attach the sensor wire.
  4.
