Throttle Position Sensor

OPERATION



Throttle position sensors are usually mounted on the side of the throttle body. The sensor detects the throttle valve opening angle. The voltage of terminal VTA increases in proportion of the opening angle of the throttle valve. The ECM judges the driving conditions from the input signals of the terminals, and uses them as one of the conditions for deciding the air/fuel ratio correction, power increases and fuel cut-off control.

TESTING



22R-E Engine
  1. Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.
  2.  
  3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2.
  4.  

E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.

  1. Insert a 0.0224 in. (0.57mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.0335 in. (0.85mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. No continuity should be present.
  4.  

3VZ-E and 1FZ-FE Engines
  1. Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.
  2.  
  3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2.
  4.  

E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.

  1. Insert a 0.020 in. (0.50mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.031 in. (0.80mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should not be present.
  4.  

2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE Engines

  1. Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.
  2.  
  3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2.
  4.  

E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.

  1. Insert a 0.022 in. (0.57mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.029 in. (0.74mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. No continuity should be present.
  4.  

5VZ-FE Engine

  1. Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.
  2.  
  3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2.
  4.  

E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.

  1. Insert a 0.013 in. (0.32mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.021 in. (0.54mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. No continuity should be present.
  4.  

3F-E Engine

  1. Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.
  2.  
  3. Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2.
  4.  

E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.

  1. Insert a 0.0303 in. (0.77mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.0429 in. (1.09mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should not be present.
  4.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the throttle position sensor electrical connector.
  4.

  1. Loosen the sensor attaching screws and remove the sensor.
  2.

To install:
  1. Make sure the tangs to the sensor are in good shape, not bent. Place the sensor on the the throttle body.
  2.  
  3. Attach the sensor mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for any problems.
  8.
