  1. Elevate and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential oil.

  1. Make matchmarks and remove the propeller shaft.

  1. Loosen the staked part of the companion flange nut. Use a counterhold tool on the flange and remove the nut.

  1. Use a screw-type extractor to remove the companion flange.

  1. Use an extractor to remove the oil seal and oil slinger.

  1. Remove the bearing spacer, bearing and oil slinger.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the new bearing spacer, rear bearing and oil slinger.
  2.  
  3. Install the new oil seal. Use the correct size driver to install the seal. Drive it in to a depth of 0.059 in. (1.5mm) below the lip.
  4.  
  5. Apply a coat of multi-purpose grease to the inner lip of the seal. Install the companion flange.
  6.  
  7. Coat the threads of a NEW nut with multi-purpose grease. Counterhold the flange and tighten the nut to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Use a torque wrench to measure pinion bearing preload. Correct preload on a used bearing is 5-9 inch lbs. (0.6-1.0 Nm) and on a new bearing is 10-17 inch lbs. (1-2 Nm).
  10.  

If preload is greater than specified, replace the bearing spacer. If preload is less than specified, tighten the companion flange nut in 9 ft. lb. (13 Nm) increments until the correct preload is achieved. Maximum torque for the nut is 165 ft. lbs. (223 Nm). If this value is exceeded, the bearing spacer must be replaced; do NOT back off the flange nut to lower the torque or preload.

  1. Check the run-out at the companion flange; maximum allowable run-out is 0.003 in. (0.10mm).
  2.  
  3. Stake the pinion flange nut.
  4.  
  5. Fill the differential with the correct amount of fluid.
  6.  
  7. Install the front propeller shaft.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  10.  

T100 and Tacoma
  1. Remove the engine undercover.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a chisel and hammer, loosen the staked part of the nut. Hold the flange and remove the nut, then the flange.
  8.  
  9. With a seal extractor, remove the oil seal and slinger.
  10.  
  11. Pull the bearing from from the drive pinion, then extract the spacer.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the new bearing spacer, rear bearing and oil slinger.
  2.  
  3. Install the new oil seal. Use the correct size driver to install the seal. Drive it in to a depth of 0.059 in. (1.5mm) below the lip.
  4.  
  5. Apply a coat of multi-purpose grease to the inner lip of the seal. Install the companion flange.
  6.  
  7. Coat the threads of a NEW nut with multi-purpose grease. Counterhold the flange and tighten the nut to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Use a torque wrench to measure pinion bearing preload. Correct preload on a used bearing is 5-9 inch lbs. (0.6-1.0 Nm) and on a new bearing is 10-17 inch lbs. (1-2 Nm).
  10.  

If preload is greater than specified, replace the bearing spacer. If preload is less than specified, tighten the companion flange nut in 9 ft. lb. (13 Nm) increments until the correct preload is achieved. Maximum torque for the nut is 173 ft. lbs. (235 Nm). If this value is exceeded, the bearing spacer must be replaced; do NOT back off the flange nut to lower the torque or preload.

  1. Check the run-out at the companion flange; maximum allowable run-out is 0.003 in. (0.10mm).
  2.  
  3. Stake the pinion flange nut.
  4.  
  5. Install the front driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Fill the differential with the correct amount of fluid.
  8.  
  9. Install the front propeller shaft.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  12.  

Land Cruiser
  1. Elevate and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Make matchmarks and disconnect the front propeller shaft.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the staked part of the companion flange nut. Use a counterhold tool on the flange and remove the nut.
  6.  
  7. Use screw type extractor to remove the companion flange.
  8.  
  9. Use an extractor to remove the oil seal and oil slinger.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the oil slinger and a new seal. Use the correct size driver to install the seal; drive it in to a depth of 0.04 in. (1.0mm) below the lip.
  2.  
  3. Apply a coat of multi-purpose grease to the inner lip of the seal. Install the companion flange.
  4.  
  5. Coat the threads of a NEW nut with multi-purpose grease. Counterhold the flange and tighten the nut to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Use a torque wrench to measure pinion bearing preload. Correct preload is 4.3-6.9 inch lbs. (0.5-0.8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If preload is greater than specified, replace the bearing spacer. If preload is less than specified, tighten the companion flange nut in 9 ft. lb. (13 Nm.) increments until the correct preload is achieved. Maximum torque for the nut is 253 ft. lbs. (343 Nm). If this value is exceeded, the bearing spacer must be replaced; do NOT back off the flange nut to lower torque or preload.
  10.  
  11. Check the run-out at the companion flange; maximum allowable run-out is 0.02 in. (0.10mm).
  12.  
  13. Stake the pinion flange nut.
  14.  
  15. Fill the differential with the correct amount of fluid.
  16.  
  17. Install the front propeller shaft.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
