REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

These procedures allow the control unit to be pulled forward out of the dash. Generally, this is sufficient to allow inspection of the lever functions, etc. If the control head is to be removed, the cables must be disconnected from each lever. In some cases, it may be easier to disconnect the cable at the heater linkage and pull the cable through the dash.

Pick-Up and 4Runner
EXCEPT 1996 4RUNNER
  1. Remove the trim panel surrounding the controls.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knobs from the control levers. These knobs do pull off, although often with great effort. Don't damage anything when exerting force on the knob.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the A/C switch.
  6.  
  7. Use a thin, flat bladed tool with a protected or taped edge. Carefully work the blade into the area at the bottom of the control unit and pry it out.
  8.  
  9. Gently pull the unit forward. If equipped with a clock in the housing, disconnect the clock. Disconnect the lighting harness and pull the control unit forward.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install in reverse order, making sure the electrical connected are engage before installing the unit. Install the knobs securely and install the trim panel.
  2.  

1996 4RUNNER
  1. Remove the center console cover and the center finish panel.
  2.  
  3. Pull off the heater control knobs.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the A/C switch.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the control panel screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment door and lower finish panel.
  10.  
  11. Tag and disconnect the heater control cables.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw and pull out the heater control assembly, then disconnect the harness.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Attach all of the heater cables to their proper locations and adjust if needed.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness and install the control assembly in the dash.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower finish panel and glove box door.
  6.  
  7. Tighten down the control panel. If equipped, install the A/C switch.
  8.  
  9. Push on the heater knobs, then install the center console cover and center finish panel.
  10.

Tacoma and T100
  1. Tag and disconnect the heater control cables.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cup holder and the heater control knobs.
  4.  
  5. Pry loose the clip, then remove the A/C switch (if equipped).
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel center lower finish panel. Remove the screws retaining the heater control assembly in the dash, then separate the harnesses from the unit.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Attach all of the heater cables to their proper locations and adjust if needed.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness to the control and slide into the dash, tighten down.
  4.  
  5. Attach the instrument panel center lower finish panel.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater control panel, then the A/C switch if removed.
  8.  
  9. Put the cup holder back into the dash, then push the heater control knobs onto the control arms.
  10.  
  11. Check the operation of the unit, slide the cables to check for tightness.
  12.  

Land Cruiser
1989-90 MODELS
  1. Remove the heater control lever knobs. Remove the ash tray.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 5 screws holding the trim panel surrounding the heater controls. The panel is also held by 2 concealed clips at the lower left and upper right corners; loosen them and remove the trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Unplug any wiring connectors to the trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four retaining screws. Remove the heater control panel and the spacer.
  8.  


WARNING
The trim panel is long and thin; it is easily broken by rough handling.

  1. Unplug the wiring connectors and remove the center vent.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Assemble the controller, connect the wiring and fit the assembly into the dash. Install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the center vent.
  4.  
  5. Install the trim panel; make certain each clip is correctly seated.
  6.  
  7. Install the ash tray and install the control knobs.
  8.  

1991-94 MODELS
  1. Remove the ashtray. Remove the ashtray holder.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 3 screws holding the lower instrument panel trim. The trim panel is also held by six clips; each must be gently pried loose.
  4.  
  5. Once the panel is loose, unplug the wiring connectors to the switches and remove the panel from the area.
  6.  
  7. Remove the knobs from the heater control levers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the heater faceplate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four screws and pull the heater control unit forward and out of the dash.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Fit the control unit into the dash and install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the faceplate and install the knobs on the controller.
  4.  
  5. Hold the large dash panel in place and engage the wiring connectors to each switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the trim by aligning all the clips at once and gently pushing each into place. Install the retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the ashtray holder and ashtray.
  10.  

1995-96 MODELS
  1. Using a flat-bladded tool, remove the two claw clips, then remove the cup holder.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray.
  4.  
  5. Separate the center cluster finish panel from the heater control assembly. Pull out the control assembly, then disconnect the harnesses.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Attach the harness to the back of the control assembly, then install into the dash.
  2.  
  3. Attach the finish panel to the control assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the ashtray.
  6.  
  7. Install the cup holder.
  8.
